According to Andrew MacKinlay F1 is not a real sport!!!

Labour MP Andrew MacKinlay said of the BBC's F1 return announcement:
"the licence fee should be spent on real sports rather than the wealthy industry of Formula One"

I think Andrew needs a few people to email him reminding him how much the F1 industry is worth in jobs and revenue to the UK.

As i posted in the other thread he claimed over 130K last year, 3 times as much as the MP who came bottom of the expenses league.As ITV have pulled out of their contract with 2 years to run, i suspect the Beeb might well have got a good deal...

Heard that knob MacKinley being interviewed on Radio 4 this evening. He was suggesting that the BBC should concentrate on sports that more people can actually participate in, such as "atherletics", whatever that is! He also inferred that there wasn't much of an audience for F1. Clearly knows his stuff then. Another class act from Labour!

I was incensed to read your comments on the BBC website regarding their securing of the F1 coverage from 2009. You are obviously not aware of the contribution that F1 makes to the UK economy and the fact that this is one of the very few fields where we are world leaders.
The UK motorsport industry provides 38,500 full- and part-time jobs, which includes 25,000 highly skilled engineers.
The UK F1 industry's engineering sector turns over £5.25bn per year, more than half of which comes from exports. The creative side - events management, marketing and sponsorship - is worth a further £3bn per year.
This is a proper sport and a superb showcase industry for the UK which is self-supporting unlike your 'proper sports' which we, as taxpayers will have to support come 2012.
Any contribution the taxpayer is making towards the F1 coverage on the BBC will truly be a drop in the ocean compared to what the olympics are going to cost us!

erm, its the BBC we are talking about. if there is one corporation on the face of the planet that would fail to get a good deal, even if it had a "Half Price Today" sticker on it, the BBC would still not get a good deal.in fact, in the market for F1 of 1, they still managed to pay £10m per annum than ITV. no wonder Bernie was happy.
Six years ago and even last year - to some extent - I would've agreed with that MP.
Thank God they got rid of pit-to-car telemetry, TC, LC, engine braking.
If F1 was truly a sport then the drivers would have equal machinery and it would be all down to driver skill. But hey, that's different argument altogether and we all know motor racing is at times a complex, technological sport
