Race cameras

Just a quick question, I quite fancy getting a camera fitted to my race car and am looking for advice from people who already run them. I'm looking at bullet cameras but cant decide between solid state recording or getting a camcorder with AV in.
How good is the quality from soild state units recording at MPEG2 or MPEG4?
I have looked on the sites that sell these kits but would rather have opinions for people who've used them.
