It's entertaining but I can't help but wonder why Gilles let Arnoux close such a big gap, he had plenty of speed once he was caught, didn't he ever read his pit board?

I like the mutual trust and respect between the drivers. If you banged two F1 cars together like that today, they'd fall to pieces.

If I remember correctly Gilles described the Ferrari as a st box and a big red Cadillac, so I don't think Gilles let Arnoux to get close, he just couldn't help it.

Can't remember who, but a F1 driver who raced against Gilles, is quotes as saying that Gilles was the hardest bd to race but completely fair.

Thats whats missing from F1, and other racing, today.

My recollection of those races isn't 100%. What was unfair and unsporting about them?

Must remember that they are modern races, all modern races are unsporting
Of my old tapes of "the golden age of F1" alot were processional races, most didn't make it to youtube unsuprisingly.

I'd like to see a formula one series run under 'Group B' style rules, minus homologation and other irrelevancies, of course... (on second thought, f1 homologation would be nice!) The idea makes me wonder just how different the cars would look, were the technicians given near-total freedom to design the best cars possible. I wonder if humans would even be able to adequately drive them!

For all that FIA have done to consolidate f1's place in the modern world, I have a feeling that the excitement and popularity of such a technological and racing free for all would rapidly build momentum, even were it forced to sub-par tracks, unpopular locales and so on.

Of course, in time it would no doubt go the way of F1, its seemingly unstoppable progress surreptitiously impeded by 'improvements' and 'corrections,' subjected to the push and pull of a million agendas, legally apprehended on every imaginable grounds as every man struggles for control of his rightful portion, till it dies the death of a thousands cuts. This would happen an order of magnitude faster than has with f1, too.

But in the days before that, however short, there would be many moments of freedom and specatcle, many treasured memories!

You can have this kind of racing again. You just need to ban all these stupid little winglets, halve the size of front and rear wing surface areas, and run steel (or maybe ceramic) brakes.
