Launch Control

Could someone tell me the difference between Launch Control, and Traction Control, as I see it there the same thing but used in different context. If the driver is using Launch Control at the start of the race then there is a driver add there helping the car move away and controlling power to the back wheels?

Launch control will manage the revs to allow the optimum wheelspin for best forward motion. Traction control will work in a very similar way, but will work to allow the optimum slip angle for best grip and traction through and out of a corner.

However, what they have now is not Launch Control, but a Launch Map. So the control of how much fuel is injected into the engine, when the spark is fired, how the throttle pedal travel is interpreted, etc. is different to usual running to make moving away from a standstill easier and more reliable.

The main differences were that the old systems were active - they'd see what was happening and make changes to compensate. The new system is a fixed system to try to help the driver as best as they can, but it's still up to the driver to react.

In simple terms, launch control actively controls both engine torque and clutch release to optimise straight line traction off the line. Traction control only controls the engine torque to optimise both straight line traction and corner exit grip on power.
