Racing drivers/Engineers

I've just taken up racing RGB, I've noticed that when you chat to people outside the racing world, as soon as they know I'm a driver, they expect me to know loads about the grand prix/BTCC etc (Not an unreasonable assumption of course). The fact is I don't know! I could probably name about half a dozen current F1 drivers at a push. I don't dislike watching motorsport, obviously, but I'll not usually make the effort to stay in. That said, I do tape WRC access all areas -though that's to see the cars in action, being driven hard by good drivers. I honestly don't know or care about other people's championship results.

I started racing because I like the machines (deliberately didn't say cars there)from an engineering point of view (I had a classic 911 I sold to fund the racing) and I like driving, challenging myself to get better at it seemed like a good idea. I know quite a bit about the formula I'm racing in, but not much outside that bubble. I guess it's a little like the guy who can reel off the last 20 years of football results for team x, but hasn't been down the park for a kick-around for the same length of time. Only in reverse.


Am I wierd?

Maybe you should consider not telling people you are a racing driver if it is so much of a ball-ache? tell them you are a rocket scientist, that usually has people making their excuses and walking off...

In the UK people get jealous for some reason, better not to tell them, unless you are big headed etc and don't give a F*** etc etc etc.....

Like turning up too a customers in your Vanquish S, not the best thing to do.

I think its fairly common whenever you mention that you participate in motorsport.
I mechanic for a mate on hillclimbs, and as soon as you mention what you're up to at the weekend, the conversation usually heads in the direction of " who do you think will win F1 this year".... sadly this is the only level of motorsport that many people relate to.
