How do you imagine your ideal sport car in 2020 ?

interesting question, in 2020, my ideal sports car would be a small capacity (2L) V8 in a monocoque chassis with detachable bodywork so it could be a caterham style or a radical style. it would be available in kit form with a large options list going back to the original days of the kit car where owners could spec cars dependant upon purpose and wallet size....

Realistically, there will be no single definition of "sports car" in 20 years time. Seeing how the market is fragmenting and diversifying at its current rates, I think we will see further development of niche markets and low volume cars to satisfy ever expanding tastes.

We'll see further use of electronic aids and a concentration on power to weight ratios, involving more plastics and synthetics materials. Renewable fuels, such as ethanol, may be more prominent.

There will be a raft of cheap, Asian, mass produced sports cars, we might even see some Chinese brands making an impact here...

I think my sports car in 2020 will be one of my model cars.

Rising road tax and fuel prices are probaly going to make me turn to something dull before 2020.

Very lightweight with a small capacity turbocharged engine. I would expect something like 500kg and 200bhp. It would be purely a fun car. Unfortunately I think the days of running something with a 4l V8 as an all-rounder will have drawn to a close by 2020 thanks to extreme environmentalism going unchecked.

My everyday car will probably be very very dull but at the weekends

Thank you for your replies, that's very interesting.
By sport car, I don't mean special racing cars, sport cars in general. It can go from the GTI to the Ferrari passing by the BM M or a caterham. It can be a car you drive with only on tracks, only on public roads or both.

2 seats. I honestly don't think anything with 4 seats can be considered a sports car. A GT perhaps, but not a sports car.

RWD. There can be no other choice for on-track sports handling.

Lightweight. Less than Elise weight would be a good target

Enough power. Doesn't need loads, 200bhp is probably more than enough if you can get the car down under 700kg...

Lotus elise type, but lighter. Would be thinking 1 litre turbocharged engine (~3 bar) with some type of hybrid technology to boost accelleration at low rpm.

Big, heavy V8 engines will be long gone. With average CO2 emissions of new cars needing to be down at 80g/km by 2015 (iirc) then maybe even a 1 litre would be seen as too big. It will certainly be interesting to see what will happen in the future.

I'd have hoped that Lotus (or someone else) would have moved the game on quite a bit in the next 10 years. I've got an Elise now: I want to have something better by 2020!

I reckon that the focus/competition won't be 'lets make a car that can do 300mph' more 'this car can do 200mph, but with less emmissions/more mpg than the next car'
