As Max Mosley has said he will not seek re-election when his term is up next year, and there is unfortunately (to put it mildly) a chance that he will survive the vote in June who should the next President be, and what can be done to help ensure they get elected. Some of the points which I think have to be taken into consideration or are important are:
- the person has a much larger remit than Formula One, including most Western European motorsport and road cars with respect to safety.
- Whoever takes on the job has to be unbiased and prepared to remove any current biases.
- The person needs to instigate a policy of complete transparency for all FIA activities.
- A system of accountability should be introduced to allow true consultation with the motoring public and motorsport fans.
- The person needs to have respect on a worldwide basis, accepting cultural differences and working to make the most of these.
- The person needs to be paid a good, but not extortionate, salary by the FIA so there is no requirement to do "deals" elsewhere.
- It does not have to be anyone who is currently in the public eye.

Bernie Ecclestone and Max Mosley worked hard to persuade those who had the chance to vote for MM when he took over as President. Whoever wants to challenge MM probably needs to start campaigning soon if the change is to take place next year in order to build sufficient support to topple whoever MM and BE try to ease in to help them maintain the rather excessive incomes and favours from elsewhere to which they have been accustomed.

So, who should it be and how can we support them to get some positive change?

I hear Ari Vatanen has been suggested - he'd make an excellent choice, knowledge from a competitors point of view and he's an MEP, so is politically savvy.

Actually there shouldn't be just one person to replace him.
They should split the roles like they did before Mosley; one for motorsport and one for general motoring.

Both functions are more complex than should be handled by just one person. Also it will reduce their ability to become corrupt with power as well as allowing each to concentrate on their specialist area.

And whilst they should have a good understanding of motorsport in general, it certainly shouldn't be anyone that has had any senior involvement within F1 (team, manufacturer, sponsor etc).

Peter Sauber was mentioned somewhere I read...seems like a not bad idea to me actually.

Enough experience at all levels or motorsport and business, independent (as far as these things go)

Ummm, so have an F1 President who's name is on one of the teams?!
Yeah, I'm sure nobody will think he will be biased whenever Sauber-BMW are involved with anythingwink

He's not involved anymore is he?...(having looked, fair enough he still is, thought it was name only.)

At which point...yeah, pretty stupid idea ...although I'd say arguably less than Todtwink

Cant be anyone who has links to a current race team. No matter what they say it wouldnt be fair. I read Todt and Ron might go for it and I dont think that would be fair.

Isn't that sort of attitude the reason people dislike Mosely?

Better than Todt not in principle; better because we're talking about a basically decent man versus a basically corrupt one.
At the time of the sale to BMW, it was reported that Sauber would retain a minority stake (10%?).
