The format had got very dull. The top drivers aren't really interested in talking, the mediocre ones are happy to get their sponsors on telly and the 'celebrities' never seem to know anything about the sport at all, sometimes including who got them the f*cking VIP pass in the first place.

I don't think that the grid walk was a particularly good bit of the coverage anyway. But if Brundle goes back to it he should walk the grid and comment on the positions - but not shove his mike in front of guys about to do their job who are completely engaged with the task at hand - not talking to the media.
I think it might be more to do with the distance from the grid to the commentary box. There was one race earlier in the season where Brundle left the grid and JUST got to the commentary box in time to hear James Allen starting to waffle his unique brand of sh'ite.
Since ankles are knackered from varous crashes, so he can't run for too long, and let's face it... would YOU run work up a sweat for the pleasure of sitting next to James Allen???

Surely talking to the media is a large part of a professional drivers job? We can have a conversation about whether that ought to be the case to the extent that it is but that's another question...--

True. But there aren't many sports where the media expect to bother the competitors literally minutes before competing. Can you imagine an althlete conducting an interview whilst limbering up and mentally preparing themselves for their race?

It must be such a strain for them, luckily they're paid millions of dollars a year.
I felt that the pit lane walk gimmick Brundle brought to F1ITV would fizzle out, as he became less connected, and is now just a tv bod.
He's no long at the tip of the ziggurat with all the other drivers and teams, no mates "in" there, such as Berger et al.
Of course, Bernie on the wind-up didn't help.

Haha, is he giving Brundle n' Bernie the 5 knuckle shuffle sign?I heard Brundle interviewed on Chris Evans on Radio2 lastnight, he was asked why weren't there grid walks at the last 2 GPs and he said "it's a victim of it's own success, there are now so many tv crews on the grid it's difficult to move". He also said "they (drivers etc) should be good to the media on their way up as they'll meet them again on the way down". True enough, he's been given the brush off by the Massa's and Kubica's of this world far too often perhaps!
