Would this make a good 1 hour race championship
Discussion
Hi,
I don’t if you have seen the topic in BritCar about BritSports 2009 where people were in the end asking for 1 hour races for cars that can’t it seems to get in to BritCar or find it to expensive.
This got me thinking to what do team and race drivers want and could I get a 1 hour race championship off the ground and make it work for the people who want 2 driver race without having 3 figures upwards.
The prototypes and kitcars/westfields and caterhams would race together as would the Saloon and GT cars.
So I have some questions to you the team owners and drivers what are you looking for, would the following work.
1) 8 Double Headers over the season so you get 16 races of each race lasting an hour with 30 minute qualifying for each race giving a total 3 hours track time.
2) Start Money and Prize Money
3) Free Choice on Tyres
4) Original Engine and Induction to stay.
5) Original silhouette
6) Gearbox Open
7) Brakes Open apart from no Carbon Discs or Pads
8) Ballast for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each class up to a maximum of a 100kgs, but you would lose ballast should you finish out side the top 3. Should a team still be winning you then get a 1 minute pit stop, which you have for the rest of the season, should you still win the next round you get another 45 seconds added to your 1 minute so you would have a pit stop of 1 minute 45. Should you still win then we add another 45 seconds and so on.
9) Classes: Kit Cars would be up to 1600, 1601 – 1800, 1801 – 2000, over 2001
Prototypes would be up to 1300, 1300 – 1800, 1801 – 2000, and 2001 – 3000, over 3001
Saloon & GT Cars up to 1300 dual value, 1301 - 1600 Dual Valve & up to 1300 Multi Valve, 1601 - 2000 Dual Valve & 1301 - 1600 Multi Valve, 1601 - 2000 Multi Valve, 2001 – 3000, over 3000
10) Race Entry would be around £800 per weekend
11) Championship Entry would be around £150 per team plus £35 for each extra driver in the team.
12) Teams to make their cars available 2 weeks prior to their local race for us to have a stand with cars on it at local town centers to help promote the championship.
Lets hear your thoughts..
All the best

i'll try to offer my opinion to each issue as it arises...I don’t if you have seen the topic in BritCar about BritSports 2009 where people were in the end asking for 1 hour races for cars that can’t it seems to get in to BritCar or find it to expensive.

1)first and foremost it depends what circuits you get. an hour at mallory park would be dull, an hour at cadwell would be fun.
2)start money and prize money is not in the spirit of clubman motorsport in my opinion and encourages the desire to spend.
3)As does free tyre choice. those with money have new, high performing tyres each round, those who cant afford it suffer.
4)how can a kit car have an "original" engine? you could argue that a Caterham could have anything from a 1400cc k series to a 1700cc Xflow to a 2300cc duratec?
5)does original silhouette refer to the model or anyhitng from the range, ie, could in the case of Keith Murrays Audi at combe, an A4 Audi be fitted with S4 wings and still be legal?
6)open gearbox = money.
7) sounds expensive!
8)this just sounds too complicated, whats the point in allowing free gearbox and tyres if you are just going to punish success? surely a team will go out to win the first race in the powerful car then trundle round in fourth for the second race and repeat this? it doesnt stop a team from spending more money to compensate for weight, it just increases the chances a team has to manipulate the rules to their benefit? look at the WTCC how many drivers in 8th on the last lap challenge for 7th? none, becuase they want pole in race 2. the timing thing for the pit stops is too complicated too. why punish success? write the rules so there are limited modifications permitted so increasing time spent in the pits is not a necessity?
9)with regards to the classes you will have a huge speed differential, you are efectively allowing saloon cars up to 1300cc like 106 rallyes on the same track as 3000cc protoypes like the Nissan engined Jade or a Radical SR8. no thanks, cant see either driver enjoying that one? even a 200cc caterham would get thumped by an SR8? the speed differential is too high. maybe have one race for saloons and another for kits and prototypes?
10) sounds ok but i would want good circuits for that, not Lydden etc!
11) sounds ok
12) only if you paid for the travel costs associated and accepted that sometimes the cars might not be available if they are being tested or repaired.
just my tuppence worth, primarily my concern would be the speed differential, on straights and cornering. cars of the calibre i have mentioned would just be too dangerous on a track together i do like the idea of more endurance events but even an SR3 would lap a 106 Rallye once every 6 laps at Combe....
As a practical point about pit variable timed pit stops how will you monitor this? At most circuits these days (with some notable exceptions) you'll be lucky to get many pit marshals, certainly not enough to accurately monitor the timing of each stop.
If you're going to do something along these lines you would be better having regs that refer to the total duration of the stop as timed between two timing loops, at most circuts TSL (formerly MST) have timing loops at pit in and pit out so you can check the time between the two loops. You'd need an idea of the length of time spent in the pit lane at the pit lane speed limit for each circuit to give a realistic figure which equates to probably 1 minute etc. stationary.

Thank you for your answers so far and let's if I can answer some of these
1)first and foremost it depends what circuits you get. an hour at mallory park would be dull, an hour at cadwell would be fun. WE WOLD BE LOOKIG AT CIRCUITS THAT COULD OFFER US PITS, WHICH WOULD MALLORY WOULD BE BE OUT AS WOULD CADWELL IF TEAMS REALLY WANTED TO CADWELL THEN WE WOULD GO.
2)start money and prize money is not in the spirit of clubman motorsport in my opinion and encourages the desire to spend. WE ARE LOOKING TO GIVE SOMETHING BACK TO THE DRIVERS AND TEAMS.
3)As does free tyre choice. those with money have new, high performing tyres each round, those who cant afford it suffer. GOOD POINT WE COULD SAY THAT A SET OF TYRES HAVE TO LAST 2 RACE MEETINGS. ALLOWING 1 SPARE AS WELL.
4)how can a kit car have an "original" engine? you could argue that a Caterham could have anything from a 1400cc k series to a 1700cc Xflow to a 2300cc duratec? THEN IT WOULD GO IN TO THAT ENGINE CLASS I.E. IF YOU HAVE A 2300CC DURATEC YOU WOULDN'T BE IN THE SAME CLASS AS A 1400CC K SERIES.
5)does original silhouette refer to the model or anyhitng from the range, ie, could in the case of Keith Murrays Audi at combe, an A4 Audi be fitted with S4 wings and still be legal? YES
6)open gearbox = money. NO BECAUSE OF BALLAST. AND THIS ALLOWS CARS FROM OTHER CHAMPIONSHIPS TO COME IN AND HAVE FUN.
7) sounds expensive! I DON'T AGREE
NO THIS WOULD NOT BE TOO COMPLICATED, LET SAY YOU GET 30KGS FOR WINNING IF IN THE NEXT ROUND YOU COME 4TH YOU WOULD LOSE 5KGS SO FOR RACE 3 YOU WOULD STILL HAVE 25KGS. THEY USE BALLAST IN BTCC AND YOU DON'T DRIVERS HOLDING BACK RACE AFTER RACE. YOU CAN ONLY LOSE SO MUCH WEIGHT FROM A CAR. TIMING MAY NEED TO BE LOOKED AT I AGREE.
AS ABOVE
11) sounds ok
12) only if you paid for the travel costs associated and accepted that sometimes the cars might not be available if they are being tested or repaired. CHAMPIONSHIPS ONLY WORK WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE TEAMS, WE WOULD NOT PAY FOR A TEAM TO TRAVEL SAY 15 TO 30 MILES TO HELP PROMOTE A CHAMPIONSHIP THEY ARE IN AND GET START MONEY FOR. I UNDERSTAND SOMETIMES THE CARS ARE NOT AVAILABLE.
KEEP THE QUESTIONS COMING

WE WOLD BE LOOKIG AT CIRCUITS THAT COULD OFFER US PITS, WHICH WOULD MALLORY WOULD BE BE OUT AS WOULD CADWELL IF TEAMS REALLY WANTED TO CADWELL THEN WE WOULD GO. i think that its somewhat naive to expect pits as a new championship, you will effectively not be able to run on the same bill as other more popular championships.
2)start money and prize money is not in the spirit of clubman motorsport in my opinion and encourages the desire to spend. WE ARE LOOKING TO GIVE SOMETHING BACK TO THE DRIVERS AND TEAMS. most drivers i know do it for the love of the sport not to get some cash. ok, a bit of cash helps but its not the reson to do it. you also mention teams, this implies that the clubman might get left behind a bit. in my opinion, you simply cant have a championship which caters for teams and driver entrants alike.
3)As does free tyre choice. those with money have new, high performing tyres each round, those who cant afford it suffer. GOOD POINT WE COULD SAY THAT A SET OF TYRES HAVE TO LAST 2 RACE MEETINGS. ALLOWING 1 SPARE AS WELL. are the spares the same compound and style? what about wets, cut slicks, slicks, how do you check the tyres and what about punctures etc...
4)how can a kit car have an "original" engine? you could argue that a Caterham could have anything from a 1400cc k series to a 1700cc Xflow to a 2300cc duratec? IF YOU HAVE A 2300CC DURATEC YOU WOULDN'T BE IN THE SAME CLASS AS A 1400CC K SERIES. my point was more, what makes an original engine? what stops me fitting a bike engine like a megabusa to a fisher fury and running that in the >1400 class?
5)does original silhouette refer to the model or anyhitng from the range, ie, could in the case of Keith Murrays Audi at combe, an A4 Audi be fitted with S4 wings and still be legal? YES hmmm
6)open gearbox = money. NO BECAUSE OF BALLAST. AND THIS ALLOWS CARS FROM OTHER CHAMPIONSHIPS TO COME IN AND HAVE FUN. how does adding ballast reduce the cost? straight cut boxes arent cheap and offer a good advantage
7) sounds expensive! I DON'T AGREE eh? have you seen the price of an AP racing set up, six pot calipers etc.
THAT IS WHAT I SAID yeah i missed this point sorry, but still a GT car vs a 106 rallye, a 911 GT3 for example, in my opinion, the speed difference is to great, even at combe as has been regularly discussed, they have problems in the saloon car championship with the Evos etc. safety should be a primary concern.
10) sounds ok but i would want good circuits for that, not Lydden etc! AS ABOVE big circuits cost big bucks.
11) sounds ok

I UNDERSTAND SOMETIMES THE CARS ARE NOT AVAILABLE. no championships work if they promote close racing and are enjoyable for drivers and spectators alike. the best race of last year at combe was the formula vee race and pretty much anyone who was there will say the same. you are effectively asking a team to give up a day, transport their car to a venue and transport it back for nothing. a driver entrant could not do this as he/she would most likely not be able to afford the time of work. in my opinio, it is the circuit and the promoters responsibility to advertise the event and not rely on competitors cars etc. the thing about motorsport ios the people who go to the clubbie events at say combe, go regardless of whats on and know when hte events are. i dont think you will get much success advertising the event on a thursday in the local shopping centre, who will be there apart form students, the unemployed and housewives? cant see them dashing back home to tell their partners about the great time they could have at a race circuit the next weekend. spectating is expensive and if the weathers crap you wont get the people withthe passing interest. a race circuit is not the place to be in the pouring rain.
KEEP THE QUESTIONS COMING

9)with regards to the classes you will have a huge speed differential, you are efectively allowing saloon cars up to 1300cc like 106 rallyes on the same track as 3000cc protoypes like the Nissan engined Jade or a Radical SR8. no thanks, cant see either driver enjoying that one? even a 200cc caterham would get thumped by an SR8? the speed differential is too high. maybe have one race for saloons and another for kits and prototypes? THAT IS WHAT I SAID yeah i missed this point sorry, but still a GT car vs a 106 rallye, a 911 GT3 for example, in my opinion, the speed difference is to great, even at combe as has been regularly discussed, they have problems in the saloon car championship with the Evos etc. safety should be a primary concern.
10) sounds ok but i would want good circuits for that, not Lydden etc! AS ABOVE big circuits cost big bucks.
11) sounds ok
12) only if you paid for the travel costs associated and accepted that sometimes the cars might not be available if they are being tested or repaired. CHAMPIONSHIPS ONLY WORK WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE TEAMS, WE WOULD NOT PAY FOR A TEAM TO TRAVEL SAY 15 TO 30 MILES TO HELP PROMOTE A CHAMPIONSHIP THEY ARE IN AND GET START MONEY FOR. I UNDERSTAND SOMETIMES THE CARS ARE NOT AVAILABLE. no championships work if they promote close racing and are enjoyable for drivers and spectators alike. the best race of last year at combe was the formula vee race and pretty much anyone who was there will say the same. you are effectively asking a team to give up a day, transport their car to a venue and transport it back for nothing. a driver entrant could not do this as he/she would most likely not be able to afford the time of work. in my opinio, it is the circuit and the promoters responsibility to advertise the event and not rely on competitors cars etc. the thing about motorsport ios the people who go to the clubbie events at say combe, go regardless of whats on and know when hte events are. i dont think you will get much success advertising the event on a thursday in the local shopping centre, who will be there apart form students, the unemployed and housewives? cant see them dashing back home to tell their partners about the great time they could have at a race circuit the next weekend. spectating is expensive and if the weathers crap you wont get the people withthe passing interest. a race circuit is not the place to be in the pouring rain.
KEEP THE QUESTIONS COMING
happy to help!
THANKS
DANIEL
