why on earth would he have turned off the gizmos knowing everyone else was using them? How about just taking his comments at face value? An upturn in form is, after all, relative to what everyone else is doing. Perhaps he just feels he's coping better with the changes than others. to quote:

Yes, you should
Although a comparison of last year's lap times to this year will also be affected by the 08 spec of the cars, and therefore meaningless for this purpose.
The comparison you'd need would be lap times of 07 cars to 07 cars without driver aids. I would bet that the "au naturale" spec is slower, if only marginally, which would explain why he didn't turn it off last year.
Then you'd get to a line of argument that says of course the times would be slower, because the cars were designed to have the driver aids, not to run without them. And so maybe even this comparison would be void for determining whether drivers are faster with or without the gizmos.
So, to answer your question - most likely it was Kubica saying some stuff to get the reporters to leave him be with whichever stunning continental model he happens to be porking this week (let's hope he doesn't have driver aids here either..)

I think it might be due to this years cars and engines being set up to be more drivable. Especially the torque curve of this years engines is more progressive to make it easyer to drive without traction control. Just turning off the TC on last years car would have made it much more difficult to drive in comparison to this years non-TC designed car.
(or stuff it - ok, there's always the outside chance!!

His English isn't very good. You have to look at the context of the rest of what he said.so why didn't he just turn them off last year? perhaps they made him go faster?
I'm pretty sure what he means is that THIS YEAR'S CAR is easier and better to drive than last year's car, not last year's car without TC. And when he said "at the end of last year", he was talking about the 2008 prototype car, not just the 2007 car sans TC without other modifications.
English is my second-language, so I tend to be acutely aware of how some idioms like "switch off" can be mis-used by those whose command of the language isn't quite up to scratch.
