F1 Super Licence increase of 1000%

It surprises me you have to pay more for every point you get!!!

Not sure how I feel about this - reading Perry McCarthy's book I can see that the paying drivers may struggle more than before. I don't know how much the drivers earn, but I can't see this being a major problem for some of the drivers.

The comments about Max Mosley really piss me off - he's think he's the fking queen or something!

Mark Webber's comments are interesting to highlight the monopoly of the FIA

Having said that, an increase is probably fair (everything's costing more these days), although 1000% is a big old hit at one time. I'm also not sure why success costs more. Do you need more safety equipment if you win more or something? Very odd.

As Alonso says in an interview, where's the money going? If it can be identified as into driver safety for instance, then all well and good, but it just "goes" to the FIA.

At a guess, is it to make it slightly fairer amongst the drivers: more points = higher public profile = more income from sponsors? So scoring more points might affect a driver's ability to pay (not that any of them would likely struggle, and accepting oddballs like Rubens in the Honda, etc.)

Still a big increase, regardless.

It appears the fee is retrospective, so if a driver won the championship by a clear margin and retired the FIA would be worse off! It potentially happened with Damon Hill in '96, and there was the likelihood of a much lower salary the following year as McLaren offered him a points scoring only salary to drive for them. Whilst he would have earned money the year before, it might not have been enough to pay the fee. With the retainer Lewis Hamilton was on last year, and the points he scored had he not been able to re-negotiate his terms for this year the FIA would have been getting something like 50% of his income - not sure that is fair.
