The FIA have announced that the British Grand Prix is to be staged at Donington Park from 2010.

They will seriously have to get the diggers out to get Donny up to scratch. Having trackday'd at both Silverstone is much more spacious and 'modern' than Donny and even that's meant to be one of the bottom 4 circuits on the calender.
Will be great to see the cars down crainers. Not many overtaking opportunities at Donny at the moment, one at the end of the straight. I wonder if they'll mess with the lay out...

The British Grand Prix will leave Silverstone and move to Donington Park from 2010, the FIA announced on Friday.
After months of speculation about whether or not Silverstone would retain the race, Donington Park has moved to complete a deal to secure the future of the event.

"I am sorry that we could not have helped Silverstone to raise the money to carry out the circuit improvements and run Formula One. I believe that the government should have supported them which would have cost probably less than .002% of the government's commitment for the Olympic Games."

Woohooo! I love Donington, been there for a few TC races, and they manage sub 1min30 even with the Melbourne loop there, so imagine how quick an F1 car will go round.
I am already reminiscing about Senna's 1993 victory there, even though I was barely able to walk back then. Even better for me, I live less than half an hour away from Donny, but 1 hour away from Silverstone, so finally I may be able to go to a GP!

What about lap times? They'll be seriously short, even on GP loop.
There will probably be some revisions to the layout. Expect Herman Tilke to scribble a new layout on the back of a fag packet, turning a decent track in to yet another featureless circuit and consigning the classic corners to history...)They'll be throwing some serious cash at that place then.
Will be interesting watching them into the old hairpin after Craner!

Nice of them to announce it this weekend; sensitive bunch aren't they 
I only live about 5 miles away so they will practically have to dig back to the end of my drive to get the track, pits and access in shape. I think I will cycle there come race day, I have some car parking available and will be taking advance bookings form March 2010

Can't see it happening; smacks of Octagon havinh a big annoncement saying the GP would be at Brands and then running to Silverstone and getting them to bail them out. Safety-wise Donington will need a fortune spent and that's before you talk about facilities and logistics.
Also, the Wheatcrofts didn't want the GP back, too eneconomical, so this is from the current lease-holders, so I'd say watch this space and expect another announcement in two years time!!

We'll loose most of it - Redgate will go to start with - i can't even imagine how different the track will be.
The pits aren't up to F1 standard - nowhere near big enough
I think it's a bloody disaster - we'll loose a great national circuit and i cannot imagine the traffic chaos. At least Silverstone has 2 main routes into it - Donington only has the M1

even tho the announcement has been made i can't see how it's going to happen - silverstone needs far less cash to do what bernie needs, and has struggled to find it - so where exactly is donnington going to raise the funds from?
access will have to be massively improved, new pit garages will be needed, grandstand seating and viewing areas, tilke has already been round so expect all the good bits to disappear, the track will need to be extended as F1 has a minimum lap time, probably just concrete the lot for extra run off area.

"Donington Ventures Leisure Limited has worked closely with the local and national authorities in consideration of the planning requirements that are necessary to provide a first class facility for the hosting of F1 in 2010. The details of this and the Donington Park master plan that outlines a 5 year investment programme of some £100m, will be provided at a future date.
The investment will be led by a private investor who is also a large shareholder.
Today’s signing of the contract with Formula One Management Limited brings to an end a period of commercial negotiations, none of which would have been possible without the support of Mr Ecclestone and FOM. However, Donington Ventures are still engaged in negotiations with other important third parties that should be concluded in a matter of days. Only when this is done, will they release further information to the media."
Perhaps they're going to buy Silverstone and rename it Donington ?
