oh no wont be drifting when doing it, i meant as two diffrent hobbies. i have a r32 gts-t skyline but wouldn be any use (6 cyl and turbo, and stripped out) but i also have a focus im getting back on road, 1.6, slow but as you say not nessecerily(sp) a race.
i would like to do the driving, but i may try do some navigating insitally. im based in macclesfield, and have a few mates who do this sort of stuff, or stage. but all have drivers/navigaters.
can weight saving be done, for instance removal of sound deadening, but then having interior and carpet put back in, or light body panels etc.

Aha I see.
Lots of good events up around Yourkshire/Derbyshire direction that would be worth getting out to for a look.
You can strip weight out, a lot of cars are nigh on stage rally cars with the carpets and back seats put back in. We've got no noise deadening in the car, but you can't use intercoms so if it's too loud inside then you'll have to shout!
I'm not sure whether you can change the panels/glass or not though sorry.
If you're just starting out a Focus would be ok i'd have thought, worth getting a sumpguard made up for rough bits though.
Have a look at www.britishrally.co.uk you'll need to register but it's probably the best source of info on rallying.

ive tried on there, considering ive never been on my email is banned, tried couple month ago aswell, emailed them but they never got back to me.
ive been thinking even in my skyline of putting seats back in as they weight sod all, plus looks nicer to be in. will be loud still but should be ok.
yeah sump guard be good. good call.
atm its on a 50mm drop, but will be raiseing it for road rallys.plus on standard shocks at front with the springs as the shocks went lol.

Road rallying is great fun and well worth having a go!
I don't know how rough the events up by you are but i know some of the welsh events can be pretty rough so I'd second whats already been said about looking at sumpguards and similar and making the car reliable before any performance upgrades. Also a good nav is worth his/her weight in gold and if I were you I'd go for a few practice runs late at night down your local lanes just to get used to working as a team etc.
Also again not sure about the rules up north but if allowed i'd say its worth investing in decent spotlights as well!!

It's good to get some experience, but please keep in mind that your local rally club will want to use those lanes for future rallies so be sensible and don't disturb people or use the same lanes often to avoid future PR problems.Your club may also do navigation runs from time to time.
These are in daylight, about 25 miles, and timed at about 15mph - your task is to follow the route and record as many hidden symbols as you can find.
im a member of eromc, do some stage marshalling, so joined, and also sending off for my marshall license soon so i can do rally of gb this year.
oput of curiosity what would be good upgrades.
sump guard
lights
good tyres
the car was modified, tho not highly, so ill be getting smaller wheels (17's atm) as ive gone out of that into more performance and drifting/rally. it has stiffened suspention and does handle well tho new shocks needed on front, it wasnt set up well, as id set it up so it was tail happy. there will be a few changes i think needed.
ill have a chat with couple my mates who are in the club and rally, and also see where the routes are. the car im hopeing to be sorted for october. also been told front strut braces transforms focus's
Reasons ive been thinking about getting back on the road was to have a cheaper car to drive than the skyline, struggling to afford to run it, but wanted somat still have fun in. would prefer somat rwd tbh, but it will do. And its just sat there doing nothing. Plus if my mrs moves job ill have to drive to work instead of being dropped off. Im hoping insurance for both won’t be too bad when it comes for renewal in October, if I can find a joint policy for them. Plus the car has a soft spot in my heart haha, as daft as it sounds, it’s the car I got so addicted to cars in. mate said when said was putting back on road, she went knew you could never get rid of that car haha. and i would be able to road rally in it

I always used my road car because its quiet and obviously try to use a slightly different area from where the rally is taking place.

well as it stands atm, the road rally car wont be heavily tuned, and will actually be the most used car out of the two i have.
as the other one, (louder aswell) will be used more for shows, meets and drift days and some fast road. as it costing me to much money haha and it wont meet the requirements. the focus will be what ill be useing and practicing. but should be fine.

You only have to look down the entry list for a road rally to see the variety of cars. Most people go down the 205, 106, nova etc route but really anything cheap and reliable will do. I know a few people who rate colts very highly. As already mentioned the car so long as its reliable and sturdy isn't that big a factor with the nav and sensible driving being far more important.
If I were you I'd look at any of the above suggestions. I don't know how rough road rallies are in other parts of the country but based on the welsh events I'd say your far better off buying a cheap car and spending more money on sumpguards and lighting etc than buying something new and quick in the first place then not spending as much preparing it!
Thats what I'd do anyway but your best bet is speaking to people in your area and seeing what are the most popular cars in your area.

thats the thing with the focus, its already there. just sitting there haha.
if i thought it would last me a while, then id get all the stuff for it, sump guards etc.
even started looking for bits. there is no point putting money into if it wont be suitable for future use. unless i can get weight down i suppose.

You might have to look to the Historic classes for rear wheel drive.. Escorts come to mind obviously!, not cheap, but a good Mk 2 is still one of most competitive road rally cars. Though lots of others from an A40 to a 911 fit the bill too.
All you have been told so far seems to make sense to me, I would stick with your Focus for now, try and do a few 12 cars and possibly some navigational scatters.
Have you got a Nav yet?... it's more important than the car.. and the driver some would say!

Not really understanding the above comments about Historic classes as they only exist on Historic events, there's plenty of Mk2 Escorts out on National B road rallies every weekend...
Stick with the Focus and do a couple of events in that first of all, don't bother buying loads of gear for it as ou may not enjoy the sport, for a sumpguard find a discarded road sign, the hedges near me are full of them...LOL Also don't get obsessed by the weight issue, you iwll only need to think about getting around without fails for at leats two years yet...
Have fun...
