Testing at Brands 5th Sept PM
Discussion
Andy and I are going to Brands on the Friday afternoon to test a new engine set-up. As I'm a TVR Group A car now permanently since the further allowance I have for Group B of the GT Cup, we should hopefully be running at 430 bhp at the fly. The counter is that the TVR has to weigh in at over 1200kg with driver post race, we're weighed at virtually every race and power tested 2 or 3 times so there is no escape.
We're going to set up ready for Saturday.
Any one else going?

Should this nor read "With my quite powerful and especially light Cerb!"
With the recent pace of the car, I'd be interested in hearing what it puts down on the road

I Reckon its VERY near the tonne now Mike.
At Silverstone from the DL1, he was putting out about 335bhp at the rear wheels and was weighed at 1156KG. This is consistant with the other figures I have for his weight and power and works out at 290bhp per ton at the rear wheels. In current guise, he could either lose around 40KG or gain around 12bhp and be legal to race. (just!)
I think Mikes aero and very wide tyres give him a pretty big advantage, they do seem to allow him to carry a lot of speed through the corners. At Silverstone it was clear that in a straight line the Tuscan was quicker, but in the corners he appeared to have the advantage. Maybe class B should just be regulated by having a maximum tyre width and no (or limited) aero?

I agree that maybee class B should not have the aero. However the only reason we can get heat into the large tyres is the wieght. I think the Tuscans struggle to get heat in the big ones?I think Mikes aero and very wide tyres give him a pretty big advantage, they do seem to allow him to carry a lot of speed through the corners. It's seem that most people who hit the limit of there class, seem to move up anyway.
Mike, Cliff and Jonnyw all want to go into A anyway. not sure it right to stop people developing there cars. That's part of the fun for a lot of people finding out what works and what does not.
With soo many different car (which is a good thing to have the full range of TVR racing) and very varying budgets, engine's and skills, and only 3 classes there's allways going to be an inblance. unless we can get 40 cars and 5 classes.

If you look at the 2007 regs the maximum tyre size for all cars including class A was 250x640x18 for slicks but being as all the Sag types and most of the Tuscans ran 285s and ignored this rule completely it was altered for 2008 to be free.
I believe we should revert to this, certainly for the 2 lower classes and do away with aero for all classes.
As someone who aspired for 2 seasons to make the 300 per tonne in B but for reasons only very recently becoming clear have never got anywhere near it at a meeting, I certainly think the BHP is about right for B. It is the aero and big tyres that are to a large extent allowing some B cars to punch above there apparent weight. Also there are several good drivers out there.
If there are A class cars who have recently entered the series thinking their cars are not quick enough then their problems may lie closer to home and not their competition. Most of the A cars were faster than the Bs last season but then a lot of those drivers have moved on to greater things.
Surely no-one is suggesting that we alter the rules to make up for car and/or driver shortcomings.
Bear in mind this is from a car and driver that have been crap for the last 2 seasons, with only myself to blame for taking so long to bottom the problem. This is not a personal attack on anyone so please so don't do any between the line reading.
With warmest regards for all my fellow competitors,
Tim 33.

loosing the aero might be the way to go, as extra wings are something that can easily be removed... It would also give a big visual difference between the classes.. changes to engines and weight are much more difficult and costly !!! Certainly if we had to spend money to lower power, or find extra power to go up a class, The car would be staying in the garage next season.Mike
My tuscan certainly struggles to get the heat into the larger rears, on a cold track..I've been caught out a few times on a cold damp but drying early qually, and not being able to get the best out of them. They also dont seem to add any grip on my car, they take longer to come up to temp, but then stabilize and stay consistent through the race.. I'll admit the main reason I use them is that I can just about get a season out of them !!!! as due to running slightly cooler they last longer !!!!

I ( and my belief only) believe the the B and C class cars should run non aero - If only to keep the link between the road cars and them a little stronger. For class A then no reason for people to do as they like to maximise the potential from the cars. Bearing in mind the TVR Tasmin challenge came about for road cars to go racing and then the Tuscans were combined. It would make sense this way and surely be reflective of the "spirit" of the championship.
I for one like the fact that I have a road related car on the grid and would be reluctant to add aero.
I think I will work on the nut behind the wheel first.
