Horrible news - a great shame.

That now leaves only 3 drivers left who were champions in the first 20 years of the F1 World Championship (Brabham, Surtees and Stewart). And it wasn't all that long ago.

Sorry to hear that. Too young to remember him in the 60's but I remember watching The Power And The Glory series and he came across as a really affable, decent chap.

A very sad loss. He won his last race, the 1967 BOAC 500 at Brands Hatch with Mike Spence in the Chaparral 2F, which I was lucky enough to have seen. Phil was taking seconds a lap out of the Ferrari P4 pedalled by Chris Amon and Jackie Stewart, no mean sports car drivers themselves. He also won his first ever race too, and the Le Mans 24hours 3 times, but you probably know all that. If he'd not left Ferrari in 1962 for the ill-fated ATS effort he may well have enjoyed greater succeses.
