R8 or R10?

This is probably a sightly daft question but does anybody know which is faster, the R8 or old, or the current R10 Le Mans Audis? By faster I mean a race (ideally around La Sarthe).

You can't really comment on a race around Le Mans really,not over 24 hours anyway as there are too many variables (weather, mechanical breakdowns, time in pits etc). Bu out and out pace... check out the lap times over the last 8 years and see for yourself.

Despite them reprofiling Tertre Rouge in 2007 and shaving a couple of seconds off the lap time the diesel's still faster around a lap.

exactly, you only have to use another car as a benchmark and then look at the differnce in pace between this and the R8 then look at the dismals pace...

sort of illistarates the point Henri Pescarolo's been making foe a while now.

That said, a lot of the difference in pace is down to the rather generous treatment the diesels get in terms of air restrictors, fuel load, etc., compared to petrol engined cars. It's a bit like saying one Audi road car is faster than another because one isn't artificially restricted to 155mph.

What *would* be interesting is how fast the R8 and R10 would be without all of the regulation-based restrictions - I expect the R8 might still be a rather capable machine in comparison to the R10.

Depends what you mean by faster.

In '05 the winning R8 averaged 224.4km/h where as the R10 in this years rain affected race averaged 240.7km/h - so faster over race distance but not to quite the same rules (longer stints in the oil burner/less time stationary) or track (though doubt the Tetre Rouge changes added what must have been 20/25km/h taking slow , wet laps in to account).

Ultimately two things say R10 louder than any others.

First off both Audi and Pug. upset the ACO by regularly posting laps that were 'too fast' (from memory 3:30 is as fast as the ACO believe you can safely lap La Sarthe, though I'm sure someone will correct me) - not something the R8 did or we would have seen rule/track changes already.

Secondly do you really think Audi would have switched to the R10 if it was slower than the R8? Yes they wanted to promote diesels but...and the risk of loosing to Henry Peskyrolo/Pug.? Nope, they would have 'done a Bentley' and sidelined the R10 till things changed (R8 and Bentley cars were developed in parallel, the R8 came out quicker so went to Le Mans and what would later reappear as the Bentley got the dust sheet for a few years).

well, way I see it, you have to go on qualifing pace and average laptimes per stint (in the dry)

end of the day, the rules are massively rigged for the dismals, both in engine spec's, fuel carried, and restrictor sizes...

Why don't you compare the R8 times to the Charouz Lola-Aston, or to the Pesca-Judd?
