I was watching the DVD made of the Challenge in 2006. My Question is how did this DVD get to be filmed in that year and whats the reason we had no TV in 07/08? What does it take to get a film company interested in the series? How is it done, what do we have to do to sort this problem. As you know its a lot easer to get sponsors on board when TV is involved. Mickey.

Can't really answer the question, but I think is a simple case of how much WONGA the series sponsors give to the telly people.

WONGA seems to be the answer to everything, SORRY is the answer o everything!, but is it? I dont know, is it as simple as a phone call or knowing the people in the know? who sorted the coverage out in 2006? Do the TV want us or is it that we want the TV? When all said and done it could do with sorting cos it would a brill thing for 2009!

Did alot of work last year for this year with TOYO.

You need a series sponsor to hand over £18k+ for MotorsTV slot at Teatime & repeated. It then becomes the
TOYO TVR TUSCAN CHALLENGE (or similar).
With them you also get cheap tyres and support at each round.
BUT YOU NEED TO BUY THE TYRES!!!

FYI Fred ran them at OP last year and was 3rd, and I ran them at BHI last week and was 1st and 3rd...so they can take it fine (if I was a second or so slower than on slix)

Either that, or we all chip in £££ ea to get it on telly.

For 6 meets (DH's) with 16 cars av thats.... £200 ea.

For that cash you get 3 cams + a presenter.

I'd suggest that if there was TV we would get more cars in which case the costs would come down.
6 meets 20 cars = £165
6 meets 25 cars = £130 etc
THIS IS ON TOP OF THE STD FEES AND IS PER MEET! AND EVERYONE WOULD HAVE TO AGREE AND COUGH UP...OR NO RACE. LESS CARS MEANS MORE DOSH TOO.

Thanx Andy, obviously you have gone in to this in depth in the past. Do you know who funded the 2006 year? I want to stay in the TVR series so this is why im looking to better this series, I have to think about my own racing career at my age and whats on offer.

I have a feeling that JR wants to stay with Dunlop. I think it was down to John in 2006 that he managed to get an outside sponsor (Royal Purple Oils?)to cover the TV we had. It's clearly proved difficult to repeat such an exercise since, although with the Championship status and bigger grids now, maybe that would help for next year!?

I reckon we all agree that TV would be great and certainly helps with getting sponsors on board but having said that, much of the footage from '06 was fairly poorly put together tbh. So if it's possible to achieve for '09, it needs to be looked at in a bit more detail. I'm sure Andy could elaborate on that.

If the feeling is JR wants to stay with Dunlop? Why? If other companys will pay for TV. I still pay top money for my Dunlop's this year. This is only my thoughts, not having a go at JR at all.

JR likes Dunlop because he has a lot of history with them...thats it. They are a known product on the cars and can be relied upon to handle the BHP/racing/abuse.

IF TOYO (or yoko/avon etc) came through he would have no problem with them though we would have to do some testing again...as we did with TOYO.

its just a history thing.

I ran Toyo 888's in race 1 last Sunday. They turned to Jelly on lap 3 yikes . My fastest lap in that race was lap 2. I don't think I'll be using them again in the dry.

Piont taken. But thinking of the series and persons willing to pay for TV sponsorship, would this not help in this TVR series's future and we the paying racer's would benefit.

ya pressures were wrong.
I ran within 1 sec for the bulk of the race, only one sec behind full slix earlier in the year. The last two laps after the safety car were 54's, only 0.5 secs of slicks pace.

AND I had a stuffed Diff!

true, but they are firkin expensive and fall to bits after one weekend.

All of my races and quallies this season have been on one set of dunlop slicks, 10 sessions total and I'll be doing Oulton on them as well. They are expensive but seem durable enough to me. Budget no object you'd bolt a new set on each weekend. The norm in GT Cup seems to be 2-3 new sets of tyres per weekend...eek!

As for TV, I'm not convinced of the benefit, sure it's nice to have it, but we have to accept TVR racing is a niche series. I don't think sponsors will flood in just because the racing is on Motors TV. It might boost numbers but I doubt it. Most of us race because we want, no reason other than that. I didn't think of TV coverage for one second when I started.

So what pressures should I have been running. I know what they was before the race. Lets just compare.

Oh, BTW, you have a PM on Monster wink

Personaly i wouldnt enter the series if we had to run a tyre like the 888. Whats the point in making the car slower?

Dunlop is the chossen tyre for all the top series and there must be a reason for that! They definatly seem durable and have brilliant grip.

A major pull of the series is the fact our cars can do quicker laps than you would see at your normal club meetings.

TV would be good though. As owen said it would need to be good coverage otherwise it would be a waste of time and money!

IIRC it was a criticism of the coverage in 2006 that it was poor quality. But better coverage = greater cost.

I'd love to see the series televised, It would mean I could sit at home in the warm and write the race reports without getting wet!!! (or tempted!!!)

Does it have to be Toyo that sponsors the TV coverage? If it's any other than a tyre company you could stick with Dunlops.

Indeed, as I mentioned, we continued with Dunlop in '06 and the TV was sponsored by another business. Perhaps this kind of sponsorship money, particularly in this environment is harder to come by.

In terms of toyo's, I tested the R888's at the small circuit at Oulton last year. They were about 1 sec (perhaps a tiny bit more) slower than the Dunlops. They felt pretty similar in terms of handling but simply brought in slower times. The wear and tear on them at that point was surprising - there basically wasn't any in evidence, at lesat not visually.

However, when Fred used them in the wet qualifying, he said they were awful and his times were slow. So they'd need to develop their range of tyres for our cars, whereas Dunlop know them inside out and as said, are proven with the Tuscans.

It would be nice if Dunlop had an itermediate tyre for our cars though, anybody know if they can do one?

Dunlop inters have always been available - they were not permitted under the old regs to keep costs down - just as the regs only permitted you to use 6 slicks per meeting, of which only 4 could be new and two had to have been previously used and logged by you. We all had tyre books and tyre serial nos were logged, held by Crooky the chief Tuscan scrute and checked.

Introduce inters and you need another 5 or 6 wheel rims plus the tyres, room to carry them etc etc

As an aside, I wouldn't race my car on anything other than race tyres. I'm very comfortable with Dunlops, but we also had the Tuscan working pretty well on Michelins - Even Michelin didn't have an ideal sized tyre and we ended up with a narrower tread width than the Dunlops.

The quicker you go the more you rely on your tyres to keep you alive and I wouldn't compromise in this area.

Back to the original topic - series always pay for their TV. John did a great job getting title sponsorship for 2006 to pay for it but lets face it, the coverage could at best be described as 'budget' and at worst a little embarrassing. Did anyone get sponsorship as a result?
