FIA Clarify rules on 'Chicane' cutting

If they are clarifying this retrospectively, it shows the interpretation was unclear before so how on earth do they justify "making up" the punishment over LH at Spa?

On R5 Live today they had Ian Phillips (Force India) stating that this had been stated by Charlie Whiting in yesterday's team manager's meeting. Interestingly they also claimed that this rule had been declared 2 yrs ago - although nobody else could recall this at all...

So this really depends on wether they actually were informed for not.

If they were then LH is an idiot and should have waited until after La Source for another crack at KR.

If they werent then this sounds like a retrospective enforecement of a rule that didnt exist before Spa as a justification for a poorly judged penalty in the first place.

But thats all bks anyway and asserts that Hamilton deliberately cut the chicane and wasn't forced off.

If you force someone off track and they end up in front then its tough st for trying to be clever if you ask me.

But have they defined what a corner is? Or can we expect the Ferraris to overtake by cutting the Rettifilo chicane and passing after the Curva Grande?

This was my argument right from the start. It is a new interpretation of a rule that had been observed satisfactorily for a number of years in exactly the way that LH applied it. Therefore, the Spa incident alerted them to a shortfall in in the rule, but it required a rewrite, or clarification of the rule, meaning that punishment should only be applied once all drivers are aware (unless they didn't get the email of course )

I don't think it's Whitings fault, if he was the steward he wouldn't have penalised Lewis. He's now trying to clear up the situation so drivers act cautiously to avoid penalty. (Especially in a silver car where they're recommended not to overtake a red one)
