Whitmarsh says in hindsight McLaren could have also have pitted Hamilton at the same time given how Rosberg benefited from a clear track to build a gap to the rest before his penalty was eventually issued, although he acknowledges it would have been a risky move at the time.
"What made the situation a bit more unfortunate for Lewis in Singapore was the time taken for the stop-go penalties to be applied to those drivers who had refuelled under the safety car,” he said.
“Nico was able to get the hammer down out in front while the stewards were coming to their decision – which effectively neutered his eventual stop-go penalty.
"With hindsight, I guess we could have brought Lewis in for fuel and tyres at the same time as Williams brought Nico in.
“And had we done so, Lewis would very possibly have won the race.

Also, you have to assume that LH would have been given notice of his drive though way faster than 10 laps...

I'm inclined to agree. To say that the most exciting moment of the race was the Ferrari circus act rather than anything that happened on the track says a lot. Without Piquet turning his car into a feature of the track the race would have been a procession start to finish. Trulli holding up Rosberg, Nakajima and Alonso for lap after lap demonstrates that I think.

That's NOT how I remember it. Their race fell apart when their pit lane lights incorrectly showed the car was clear to leave the pit (not safety car related) and when Kimi got airborne and hit the wall (again, not safety car related).The big winners were Red Bull who saw the crash and 'knew' there would be a safety car. How did the other teams who were shortly committed to refuelling NOT see that a smashed-up car on the track wouldn't cause a safety car? It was pretty obvious, even to me, and I was drinking beer on a sofa half a world away.
