They are different for every GP. Normally people they drag in off the street, in Japan it was all done via a televised competition.

Here's an Autosport story from Jan this year about overhauling the stewarding process, when they brought in Mosley stooge Alan Donnelly (or Allen Donely, for Derek) to oversee the three randoms.

My favourite line: "It is hoped the new system will provide more consistency in rulings and also deal with matters in a swifter way than was seen at times last year."

Ah, the politician's answer.

and then when they're not, a NEW system is announced with the assurance..

People make mistakes whether they're Stewards, Drivers or Team Bosses. I can understand mistakes, but this latest fiasco smells a bit too much like bias and no new system can change that.

Would that be the same Alan Donnelly who is Chairman of Sovereign Strategy whose website lists clients including the FIA, Formula One Administration and (until recently) Ferrari?

It certainly doesn't encourage trust in the system when the Stewards' names are kept secret.

I can understand keeping their addresses away form the public though.

That's the chap! I think this man is the villain of the piece. Under his light-touch guidance, we've had 12 penalties awarded this year, many controversial.
From the Autosport article, you get the feeling the system was built so he'd have total control over three stewards with no powerbase of their own. To quote the story: "the [three] appointed FIA stewards at each race will be chosen from nationalities that are totally neutral - so they are not the same as any of F1's competitors."
In other words, countries who aren't terribly big on motorsports.

It's impossible too equate nationality to support. There are a lot of fervent Ferrari fans who have never even been to Italy. Quite a few of them are on this forum.

You're right. The system seems designed to hire yes men with no clout of their own. People have been calling for a consistent stewarding panel that travels from race to race, but there already is one: Mr Donnelly and his panel of interchangeable parrots. The FIA teaches them what them all to say. Sqwuaaaak! Booooordais!

McLaren didn't have to go anywhere to get that information. A Ferrari employee delivered it to Woking.
