Paul di Resta drew first blood in the battle for the 2008 DTM title after setting the pace during free practice at Hockenheim.

The Mercedes driver left it until the final lap of practice to post a time of 1min 32.783secs which saw him jump to the head of the times and ahead of a raft of Audi drivers.

Indeed, his final lap put him more than three-tenths of a second ahead of second placed Martin Tomczyk, who had looked set to lead an Audi lock-out of the top of the timing sheets.

Instead, Tomczyk had to settle for second, ahead of Mattias Ekstrom and current points leader Timo Scheider – who take a two point lead over di Resta into the weekend. Tom Kristensen and Bruno Spengler rounded out the top ten.

Whilst Scheider had been quicker than di Resta in the morning session, the Scot ended the day as the only driver to lap below the 1min 33sec mark and leave him on top ahead of qualifying on Saturday and the final race of the year on Sunday.

Sunday's race will be live on Motors TV.

There's a suggestion he'll be in an F1 team next season. I can't help thinking that if Mosley gets his way, F1 is more likely to be a feeder series for an internationl DTM in 2010.

Very close between the title hopefuls. Fingers crossed for Scheider, but it's not looking too good with 3 Mercs right behind, but at least Ekstrom is up there to give him a hand.

Hopefully it won't turn into carnage like last year's finale.

International DTM is a brilliant idea. It's by far the best racing series IMO and the cars are awesome, all they need is a couple more manufacturers and it would be about perfect.

They've done it before, the meddling FIA turned the successful and strong manufacture filled DTM (Merc, Alfa, Opel) and called it the International Touring Car championship. It lasted two years and almost killed off the DTM, which took 4 years to return after the ITC ended.

Di Resta qualified 2nd ahead of Scheider but behind Estrom which puts him in an Audi sandwich. Howver as Scheider has Green right behind him his position isn't comforatble either & nor is it helped by the fact that Schneider is in 5th.

It would appear that Mercedes are considering a bigger investment in DTM next season, paying for Sky Sports to cover it. Can we read anything into that if it is indeed true?
