I was working with West Mids Fire Service at the time of the Birmingham superprix, and it took ages to work out all the alternative routes for the fire crews avoiding the circuit.

Now that the gazetteer is computerized, I doubt it would be possible to close off so many roads in a city centre, not just for the fire service but for all the other services and utilities, which, unfortunately is why this kind of thing doesn't happen any more :-(

I can't see it happening again which is a shame, too much money and disruption nowadays.

With a keen eye you can still find the clues that the first one existed, the hole in the wall of the chinese supermarket where David Hunt went in back wards being one.
