Within the motorsport tyre choice for my car there is the option of soft, medium or hard. Could someone please tell me if a hard compound is just as sticky at higher temperatures as a medium compound at lower temperatures or is the hardness more to do with endurance? Or a combination of both? With my 1st competition summer coming up in Australia i'm not sure where to go from here.
With thanks,
B

With regards to compunds, I'm not too familer with specifics but I go by a rule of thumb.

Softer compounds - good for cold conditions, where the tyre hasn't had much or any time to warm up, or the ambient temp is very low. Will wear quickly at medium temperatures / possible melting / graining if run for longer periods and allowed to overheat.

Medium compounds - Good for meadium temperatures, or colder ones if you can prewarm them. Will have a longer life than the soft compound tyres but less intial grip until up to temp.

Hard Compounds - Best for hot conditions / long sessions (endurence racing), even less grip initial grip than the medium / soft compounds but will outlast both in wear rates.

It depends on what chemical makeup is within the rubber / construction of the tyre. Maybe worth asking the tyre manufacturer / supplier for their advice on what temperatures are suitable for which tyre compounds.
