Is this a good idea given the amount of BS that's gone on between Ferrari & McLaren vis data etc?

They're McLaren engines as from next year. It may be that they're running a Merc in the back of that today and wanted a McLaren tester to do systems checks.

Wierd, but there's no way either team (Ferrari or McMerc) would have allowed it if there was going to be any 'issue'.

I can't see why it would be a problem. PDR can hardly whip it apart, check which bits look good and report back to Merc. All he can report is, yeah it had good power in these spots ... which you could find out just by asking one of the Force India drivers anyway.

I'm suprised Ferrari haven't asked for their engines back as FI are using McMerc power for 2009.

contracts will be until the end of the year typically.

plus, FIF1 don't have a car to be able to take a mclaren drivetrain at the moment, and aren't expecting to until feb next year.
