Just when you thought this 'sport' couldn't get any more contrived...

I'm all for it, the idea of playing percentages in a sport like this just doesn't fit, personally i'd like to see the points still go down to about 8th place, but just rapidly drop off from the top, something like this:

1st - 25
2nd - 15
3rd - 10
4th - 7
5th - 5
6th - 3
7th - 2
8th - 1

Having 3 points positions is a bit extreme considering there will be maybe 10 drivers fighting for them.

Bernie has finally lost the plot, no wonder Slavica wants out he's too unstable.

I wondered if having medals instead of points would have changed any recent championship results:

2008 - Massa would have won with 6 wins to Hamiltons 5
2007 - Kimi had 6 wins so still wins championship - No change to result
2006 - Alonso and Schumacher had 7 wins each but Alonso had more 2nd places - No change to result
2005 - Alonso and Kimi had 7 wins each but Alonson had more 2nd places - No change to result
2004 - Schumacher had 13 wins. No-one else had more than 2
2003 - Schumacher had 6 wins. No-one else had more than 2
2002 - Schumacher had 11 wins. No-one else had more than 3
2001 - Schumacher had 9 wins. No-one else had more than 3
2000 - Schumacher had 9 wins. No-one else had more than 4
1999 - Mika had 5 wins. Irvine only had 4
1998 - Mika had 8 wins. Schumacher only had 6
1997 - Villeneuve had 7 wins. Schumacher had 5 but was disqualified anyway
1996 - Hill had 8 wins. No-one else had more than 4
1995 - Schumacher had 9 wins. No-one else had more than 4
1994 - Schumacher had 8 wins and was disqualified from 2 races and banned from 2. Hill only had 6 wins
1993 - Prost had 7 wins. Senna had 5
1992 - Mansell had 9 wins. Senna had 3
1991 - Senna had 7 wins. Mansell had 5
1990 - Seann had 6 wins. Prost had 5. Closest so far to a change
1989 - Prost had 4 wins. Senna had 6.

So you have to go back to 1989 to get a different champion if they had gay medals rather than points.

Doing that made my teleconference fly by laugh

But as with all these things, you can't simply look at the past as if the proposed medals rules were in place, then drivers may have decided to go for a do or die manoeuvre to take the lead rather than settle for 8/6 points, which is pretty much Bernie's point.

It's to encourage overtaking and racing, kinda like the change from 2 points for a win, to 3 in football that was supposed to encourage winning.

We'll see how this works though, but somehow I can't help but feel we will be robbed of the points tactics game, which is rather entertaining in itself. '08 would certainly not have been quite so exciting.

If they're going to do it, they should go one step further and add reward for gaining places over your starting slot in the race. Like a goal difference.

(Sorry for the football comparisons!)

Will the person coming 8th get a paper medal?

If there are only 3 drivers who go away with anything we might see less fighting for the lower places. I am all for a change to encourage the driver in 2nd having an incentive to go for the win, but it has to follow all the way down.

And how will the constructors championship work?

According to Bernie it is how nearly all other sports operate - that is why football teams get a gold when they win and silver for coming second. I know nothing about football but can only assume QPR haven't achieved anything so Bernie has no idea how his team would be awarded points - he seems to know even less than me!!

And therein lies the problem - it would be even easier for the FIA to fix medal allocation.

Why don't they just make it so the person with the least points at the end of the year wins?
That is, you get 1 point for coming first, 2 points for second....20 points for 20th.

Dont like the sound of this one bit. Does remind me of when Monte said that he wants the points overhauled because in the past Felipe would have won. He would also have won with this new medal setup scratchchin

Looks like another way for the FIA run, CVC owned version of F1 to make itself worthless & to add to the demand for an all Bernie version of F1.

Next up, save money by not having any practice/quali & instead televise rock, paper, scissors for 1 hour on Sat PMs for the grid positions.

So what would have happened if you get the same year as 1982?

Rosberg who won that year, won 1 race. Didier Pironi, Niki Lauda, John Watson, Alain Prost and Rene Arnoux all won 2 races. You'd have to go into a complex order of 2nd 3rd, then 4th places and so on to work out the champion, the only way to work out who'd won would be to give them points for the places where they finish and add them up........................oh hang on isn't that what they do already. It's worked since 1950, it's not broken so why change it.

I have just read this and it is an awful idea!!! It really is just coming directly from Ferrari losing the championship despite all the outside interference!!!! I mean this year Lewis had 5 wins and Phippe had 5 wins and then there was one extremely controversial result that went to Massa in the end????? I don't see how that makes Massa a more deserved champion!!

And what happens when a driver spins out of the lead or gets put to the back of the grid? Does he/she just park the car to save the engine and gearbox for the next race when they see there is no chance of winning?

Where is the carrot for the hard trying teams at the back never with enough speed to go for the win! They are all in a points race and that's why it is fun to watch!!!

So although this may encourage the second place car to make a move it won't encourage any movement there after as they may as well just make sure they live to race another day!!!

I certainly wouln'd be paying the money to go to a track to see 2 cars race each other! Id rather watch 22+ racing for all different positions!!!

And also isn't equally a challenge to not only win races but to be in the mix at all or most of the races in a season!! Look at Kubica! Only one win but had he had the pace in the last few races to still haul in points would he really have not deserved the title?!?!?!

It's all complete rubbish!!!! I wish Bernie would just retire with his multi billion trillions and leave F1 to the people who still love it and think it is a great sport!!!

You suck Bernie!!!

...and that would have only happened because of the controversy at Spa where Lewis obviously won on the road but was penalised, gifting the win to Massa.

I really don't get Bernie when he says "most sports use medals" either. Which league (as opposed to knock-out) based sport that take place over multiple events use medals rather than points? Other than the overall Olymics league table, none that I can think of. nuts

What happens if someone wins the first 9 races of the season? Does everyone just pack up and go home?

And in other news, Bernie Ecclestone today floated a ridiculous idea which is sure to stir up great controversy, hoping this would drown out more personally embarassing matters closer to home. Here's the weather.

Absolute tosh!

Dwarf said - "The change, he argues, will rid the sport of the situation of the 2008 series finale in Brazil, where Lewis Hamilton was able to finish just fifth and still be crowned world champion."

I thought that LH was crowned WC because he, on balance, had the best season - not because of one race!

As has been said, if the gold gongs to one person in the first half of the season, there is no point in going on.

Maybe I'm in a time warp and it is actually April 1st - this is a stupid idea.
