The medals system is being employed wrong...

BE has this the wrong way. The medals system should not replace the points system, but compliment it.
This is a literal interpretation. If it were to be combined with the points system, you could see who was WDC by points, and who was the fastest or most worthy (in some people eyes but not mine) by BE's medals system.
Points should still come first, if nothing else because this is the tradition of F1 and will otherwise devalue past world champions, but the medals system could be used to 'dispute' the points WDC and you can apply this retrospectively too.
For e.g. in 1986, you could say Prost was WDC but Mansell makes him 'disputed' because he had more wins. By the same measure, in 1988 Senna is an 'undisputed' WDC because he won on points and the medals system.
Retrospectively it reads like this.
1981 Piquet is disputed by Prost - due to Prost having more 2nd places finishes.
1983 Piquet is disputed world champion by Prost.
1987 Piquet is disputed world champion by Mansell.
etc.
Piquet was WDC 3 times, but was never undisputed WDC and this seems fair to me, particularly if you are to witness or watch the whole season by the archives. It will also add more weight to the value of undisputed WDC's and gets a recorded at-a-glance mention for whoever disputes the outright claim to WDC.

1956 Juan-Manuel Fangio is disputed world champion by Stirling Moss.
1958 Mike Hawthorn is disputed world champion by Stirling Moss
1964 John Surtees is disputed world champion by Jim Clark.
1982 Rosberg is disputed world champion - by Pironi, Prost, Arnoux and Watson having more wins.
Kinda reads a bit more like boxing when someone doesn't hold all the major belts.
Sounds more workable and fair to me, in the spirit of things.

The only system that counts is the one that is in place. Wouldn't Senna have lost to Prost in '88 if the points system didn't include dropped scores? In both cases the drivers involved would have taken a different approach.
