There's no point in paying all that cash to watch a GP (for example) & coming home with your ears intact.

The GT1 Vette's and Astons sound pretty good out of the modern crop.

The turbocharged 1.5 litre F1 V6s and the near 1,000bhp F1 V10s, especially into slow bends.

But, you have to go a long way (as in, a long way further than is possible) to beat the BRM and Auto Union V16s.

Yeah, I was utterly shcoked when I first saw Top Fuel too.

It was partly the sheer volume of noise, but the thing that really stunned me was the way that there's absolutely no 'ramp up' between idle and maximum attack. They just go straight from 'blupblupblupblupblupblupblupblup' to "GRAAAAAAAAAR!" with no build up of revs between the two.

In my book it's got to be this...


The BRM H16. Only in England could someone come up with the idea of 16 cylinders in an "H" format on its side and think it would be reliable! It looks like an aero engine with the exhaust coming out from the top AND bottom of the block.


But the sound it makes is absolutely sublime.
