Lewis Hamilton MBE
Lewis Hamilton has been appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the New Year's Honours List.
"It is a massive honour and incredible privilege for me to receive an MBE from Her Majesty The Queen," he said. "It is the most amazing culmination to what has been quite a year for me. The support I have received from the UK as a whole has been fantastic and a huge motivation, it is something I am very appreciative of.
"This is not just a proud moment for me, but also for my family and every single person involved with the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Formula 1 team. I could not have achieved any of this without them.
"It has been an outstanding year for British sport as a whole, and it is great to see so many fellow sportsmen and women being honoured today.
"I am also very humbled to be included on the Honours list alongside all the members of the general public who have been recognised for their tireless work in such varied and worthwhile arenas. I am very fortunate to have been awarded for achieving my dream, it has required a lot of hard work and dedication, however it has been worth every single minute and I only hope that I can inspire young kids to do the same, whatever their dream may be."
There was also an MBE for Rob Austin, the former science and technology teacher, who established the Formula Schools design and technology competition in order to make engineering more popular and relevant to young people.[/i]

I have no problem with it provided that every one of Britain's world champions are similarly honoured, no matter how low profile their sports may be. And indeed, any previous world champions not yet honoured are mopped up too.
New Year honours appear to now be dished out for single (albeit fabulous) achievments. Perhaps it was always thus, or maybe its my rose tinted impression, but I thought in the past Honours were given to people towards the end of distinguished careers in their fields.
As an aside, the England Cricket team after the Ashes was pure political 'jump on the bandwagon' nonsense

The MBE is the lowest recognition

Everyone that won a medal at the Olympics got an MBE - including the para Olympians
Eleanor Simmonds - becomes the only child to ever receive one and Chris Hoy has received a Knighthood - now that's OTT !

Lighten up man...
Whilst the rewards of Hamiliton's sport are always somehow brought up to batter him with (and indeed, so are the dangers to defend him), anyone who SO devotes his life so singlemindedly to achieve a goal DOES deserve recognition. That he has fair and square (
) landed the World Championship at a younger age than anyone else has managed is a testament to his enormous effort (and that of friends and family, no doubt).

There are days (too many of them in fact) when I dispair of the number of miserbale bs on PH, why do you have to be negative about almost anything anyone posts on here. I hope you have a miserable 2009.
To the rest of you, Happy New Year, hope it goes well, may your track days be fast and safe, your speeding tickets few and far between, and your jobs be secure!

I doubt he wrote it, but well done to the Mclaren PR man!But the point of these words is not who wrote them but who reads them and the inspiration and motivation it will hopefully give.
As others have alluded to, there are some pretty miserable gits posting here.
