Big Bangers at Brands DVD

Just received and watched 'Big Bangers at Brands' DVD. A fantastic reminder of a lost golden era, where the best drivers in the world on their weekend off go and race those incredible V8 Sports racers around the GP circuit in front of a record crowd.

I was curious that the Mclaren Elva Chevrolet driven by Graham Hill (this is 1965) seemed to have a spare wheel and tyre positioned just forward of the dashboard. Does anyone out their know why? None of the other Elva's or lola's have this curious arrangement.

I seem to recall this was a requirement of the Group7 rules at the time. The early Lola T70s also carried a spare just behind the radiator, but not visible through the windscreen. You will notice the 1965 cars were also fitted with headlights, which were also later dropped from the regs.

Can I also ask you if you have seen both of the Can-am DVD's now available CAN-AM:SPEED ODYSSEY and
CAN-AM THUNDER. Which do you think is the best??

As stated, the McLaren M1A which graham would have been driving had a spare wheel mounted up front due to the regulations, that rule was dropped for the next season so the M1B doesn't have that.

I've got the speed odyssey DVD, it's not as good as i hoped with a lot of missed periods and info, but it's a nice addition to the collection. I haven't seen the other DVD yet.

I have Can Am Thunder. It's a nice companion to Pete Lyons' book, but there's too much contemporary domestic footage and not enough of Denny, Bruce and Mark.

As an aside, British GT in the 1960s is worth it for the footage of Martin Stretton chasing Sean Walker in Elan 26Rs at the Oulton Park in 2004 or 2005 - I forget which. Was one of the best historic battles I've ever witnessed and seeing the in-car footage gives extra depth to my own memories. The contemporary footage on the DVD there is OK, but standard.

To my eternal shame, I have neither. But the posts above reflect what I've read alsewhere, that both are light on actual period footage. Lothar Motschenbacher's ex-wife, Marilyn Fox Halder, sells videos that are more in period, but I don't know if they are available in European format. Worth checking out

I bought Marilyn's videos 10 years ago, she does sell them in PAL format. It's real nostalgia stuff, just home super 8 film footage with superimposed sound over it for the most part apart from the CanAm reunion video which is from the 30th anniversary meet. As long as you arnt expecting anything of a produced level like the modern DVD's it's good stuff.

I have both DVDs...both are quite nice, and it’s hard to decide which one is better?! If I would still have to choose just one, I would choose Can-Am Thunder because it's longer and more factual...
