looking for a book....

i am looking for a book which features many of the privateer team from the late 80s to early 90s, (Andrea moda, Life, Coloni, Simtek, Pacific etc)
no idea if any exist but if anyone has any ideas please shout!

I've sometimes thought I'd like to read a book about those teams... I've even thought of a title for such a book... "DNPQ"

even then the privateers brought some life to the f1 world. the coloni story is quite interesting and wikipedia does a reasonable job of high;ighting the absics but if theteam really did start 1991 with just SIX people in the team then that must be one hell of a story...

makes modern F1 team budgets look farcical....

You'd probably get the most out of specific year F1 reviews books.

thanks fwd, good suggestion. i was after something that might have interviews in it though, i think some of the stories could be brilliant, i think it may be one of those situations where by i have to write it in order to read it!....

I think so. My old man has a very big library but i can't recall anything of the like in there.

Perry McCarthy's autobiography has some amusing tales of his time with the Andrea Moda team.

A cracking read throughout but there's plenty of information regarding the antics of Andrea Moda in Perry Macarthy's book, flat out flat broke.

Story I heard from an ex-jordan mechanic in 1990, a few guys were driving into work in a van one morning, they saw a lump of carbon fibre sticking out of the hedge. They stopped got out and had a look, it was an f1 tub with a fail sticker on it for the fia side impact test. They loaded it into the van and gave it to the design office to look at. Apparently the team had taken the tub to be tested, it had failed and decided to bin it as it was worthless to them.

Story in perry mcarthys book about the flexible steering rack at spa is quite scary.

Didn't Jordan turn up to their first GP with only 13 people? Even in 1991 that was a tiny amount of staff to have in F1!

As for the ex-Jordan guys finding a tub with an FIA 'fail' sticker attached to it in a hedge, hmmm...

its a real shame that just 15 years ago, andrea moda turned up with a team and the £100K entry fee required, now teams have to cripple themselves financially just to get on the grid. i would much rather have loads of teams and pre-qualifying than the rubbish we get now, but hey, at least bernie did well out of it all....

Are the FIA still insisting on a c.$50m "bond" to take part.

I understand why they did it to keep the clowns out, but surely that's a barrier to entry they don't need now?

My first F1 race was the Brit GP in 1989 and I was delighted by how sh*t some of the cars were. We had a school trip and nobody could understand why I'd insisted on getting there in time for Pre-qualifying.

Some of the cars looked like they would struggle to get a podium in a Castle Combe Special GT Race.

TBH do we really need the likes of Andrea Moda? With the second car effectively there to make up the numbers and a team boss leaving the paddock in handcuffs, IIRC they were the very reason why entry became tougher (too tough in retrospect).

Quite a few well respected senior individuals in modern F1 would never have made it into the sport under the current set up. Some of them would have made Andrea Moda look like angels.

Unfortunately, there are also massive law suits in there too - which is why these revelations may have to wait until all the involved parties are pushing up the daisies.

You could try:

"Autocourse History of the Grand Prix Car, 1966-91" by Doug Nye, which gives an overview of every team within those dates. The depth of the overview obviously depends on the longevity of the team in question. Simtek isn't in there, but the others you mention are.

Another one to look at would be:

"Autocourse 50 Years of World Championship Grand Prix Motor Racing" by Alan Henry (I think).
