Best racing driver in the world today....

After watching the Rally Ireland the other day I think I'll go with Sebastian Loeb. His car control is unreal. Plus he's won WRC god knows how many times, and last time I was at Le Mans, he was doing double stints - fantastic driver

He was also quick testing the Red Bull F1 car. As an all-round driver I think Loeb has to be one of the best ever.

Valentino Rossi....no question. He is as quick in a car as on any bike. Has proved his credentials again and again by changing teams which is more than most F1 or rally drivers will ever do.

Tis difficult because GT driving and Touring Cars are so different than single seaters and rally. Tom Christiansen must be one of the greats as should our man from Guernsey in the WTCC Andy Prilaux. The DTM boys would show most people how to drive fast as would one or two of the NASCAR drivers.

Different disciplines require different skills. How many drivers alive today have won different championships, in different cars, in different disciplines. Under 7??

Out of the living drivers, Loeb deserves it more than most, yes, even Lewis.

But nobody would ever be better than Senna or McRae.

McRae was an absolute legend....watched something on DAVE the other day and it showed McRae rolling his car twice during a rally, and battering it into shape and carrying on!....how many other drivers have that much persistance?

I saw Colin McRae come through a gate at Sweet Lamb so much faster than everyone else that it was stunning. The car looked out of control. Every other car came through it with the front and rear axles in line with the fence either side but not Colin. He was seconds faster than any other driver on the bit of the stage I could see, about a 40 second stretch. An old boy I was with said, "He wont' last." and he was right. But his speed was tremendous.

Loeb makes a compelling argument for himself. Podium finisher at Le Mans, quick in a GP car, WRC dominator and RoC winner. Hard to ignore. He and Rossi are clearly a level above anyone else in their chosen fields at the moment. I think GP racing is lucky enough to have several great drivers, but none is good enough to stand out like the aforementioned. Perhaps history will reflect that...

Judging by his choice, I think he means a combination of versatility and achievements.

My pick would be Jacky Ickx: European F2 champion, European Touring Car champion, multiple Le Mans 24 Hours winner, Bathurst 1000 winner, Can-Am champion, Dakar Rally winner, World Sportscar champion.

Among the active drivers: Sebastian Loeb, Tom Kristensen, and Jacques Villeneuve.

Not bad considering he was a gymnastics gayer until he started rallying aged 20.

Ickx, very intelligent racer. Some of his stuff at Le Mans was legendary.
You can say the same for so many others though; he would be my choice.
