Would three car teams work?

In F1, if the teams were allowed to field three car teams. Only the top two positions count for the constructors championship, the drivers championship would be free. 3rd driver to have less than 2 years F1 experience.

More cars on the grid and racing.

A downside would be that potentially the top 6 finishers could be two teams only.

Alternatively allow the teams to run a 3rd car with their test driver during practice, with a short sprint race for the test drivers on the Saturday afternoon after qualy. Drivers entered for this must not have previously competed in F1.

Would spice up the saturday, and maybe get a few more spectators through the gates

Good idea! but not within there rubbish rules of keeping costs down!

If the cars are there and the drivers are there, the circuit is ready for racing, and the teams are ready, I fail to see how there is much extra cost involved with this or the idea I suggested above as the cars are going to be running anyway. Maybe fuel and tyres plus accident damage.

Why would the teams risk their spare chassis on a race that doesn't get them anything?

Extra advertising revenue?
The chance to assess newer drivers.
More Data collected from race situations, which in the current limited testing situation that the teams find themselves in, can't be a bad thing.

Teams have the complete test car with them at Grands Prix anyway, They also carry an actual "spare chassis" as in just a tub in their race trucks. so this really wouldn't make much difference.

Ah, I thought that they were only allowed 3 chassis at each event.
