Max Mosley has revealed plans for a "world engine" that in 2013 would be capable of powering FIA categories including Formula One, World Rally Championship and Formula Two.
On a visit last weekend to the rally of Portugal he said: "It would work in turbocharged form for F1 and then all the way down to naturally aspirated form for the lesser categories and in a turbocharged or naturally aspirated form for the World Rally Championship."

Interesting that VW were reported as saying they'd be interested in a 'multiple formula' engine along very similar lines about two weeks ago...On a visit last weekend to the rally of Portugal he said: "It would work in turbocharged form for F1 and then all the way down to naturally aspirated form for the lesser categories and in a turbocharged or naturally aspirated form for the World Rally Championship."

Apart from the obvious nonsense of the sheer cost to implement this, there is the potential for this to be a good thing:
1) This must not be a spec engine, but a set of 'design parameters' for manufacturers to work to. This would encourage manufacturers to be involved as they would have a larger market within whch to sell their engines.
2) Privateers would be encouraged in all categories due to the availability of engines and (theoretical) lower costs.
3) Imagine the possibility of a renegade series for year old rally cars fitted with the F1 varient of the engines - I'm thinking a kind of Group B rallycross...
