McLaren handed suspended Ban
Discussion
It would appear that the FiA have been a tad more reasonable with Mclaren this time.I
guess Spanky just hates Ron so much that without him at the helm any further punishment
would have been pyrrhic for him.

Perhaps Ferrari didn't bother whining about this because their season is pretty poor and they don't reckon they will be competing with Hamilton for the Title?
McLaren and Toyota involved in an incidentMcLaren lie about it
McLaren get off with a light but fair punishment.

Grrr....damn Ferrari
It's just the right side of pathetic to be funny.
So in part the original problem lies or what ever, occurred because McLaren were being over cautious due to how they had been dealt with in the past by FIA. So because of this like a naughty school boy lied to protect themselves unsure if anything wrong had been done (passing under yellows, allowing back etc etc) but believing that limiting details told would mean they would be punished less..
As we know now it didn't work so situation happens again, and what is expected to happen?
Does McLaren have to have their own steward sitting in all race listening to the decisions of the team to make sure nothing is contravening the regs?
12 month suspensions means this will drag on and on.....

Do we think it could be anything to do with Mercedes saying they'll leave if they get a big fine?
If it was a sporting decision made by a respected governing body with the best interests of the sport foremost in their mind, then no, it should not have influenced them one bit.Nicholas Blair said:

I reckon this has loads to do with it - FIA now seeing sense in the current climate ?To the FIA:
So, now that this is out of the way (no team should break rules, so its not about being whiter then white- its about workign withing the rules)
And the diffusers are deamed legal, and everyone is now working on theirs
can we PLEASE concentrate on the racing?? Let them race, let themd ecide who wimns the race and the championship out on the track, not afterwards in the stewards room. Please??

How can any "further facts emerge". Must have been the most investigated incident ever already. Is someone still digging?
The FIA are covering themselves should someone, Dave Ryan for example, come to them and say "Actually, Whitmarsh knew all along and instructed me to say and do what I did"
I'm not saying this is the truth, or will happen, but the FIA are legislating for it if it does.
FWIW, I think even the FIA have realised that they may lose one of their long-standing and, technically, 'private' teams (Mercedes may have a share in McLaren, but they don't own it...)
I'm surprised there wasn't a small points deduction or a small fine. This is a good thing however, because everyone can race and Lewis and Heikki aren't penalised for something not of their doing.

No, the original problem came from McMerc not knowing the rules properly, had they of done then they wouldn't have instructed Lewis to let Trulli past. Which regardless of if he actually slowed or not, the telemetry clearly shows. As we know now it didn't work so situation happens again, and what is expected to happen?

Well I’ve got to say I misjudged that one. I felt that Mossy’s lack of press releases showed that he was going for the throat.
I’ve got to say that if it was me in total control of the FiA and I’d had to suspend my attack on McLaren I would have made a few more comments to the press so as to not appear as if I have been forced into a corner.
Mossy now looks weak as everyone will suspect that it was the threats which dictated the punishment. But with an interview or two at just right time he could have come over, in the eyes of idiots and press hacks, as the grand statesman. A missed opportunity there.
All very odd.
I’m obviously missing something – despite the fact I’ve read just about everything available on the subject. We all know there must have been an awful lot going on behind closed doors, the circumstances we can only guess at (although the lack of facts should not dissuade us from doing so), but that only increases my bewilderment about the lack of punishment after the threat.
Very, very odd.
So why no explanation?
Why no censure for Mercedes? What they did, in essence, was to try (and it seems succeed) in influencing the decision of a court, albeit to be fair. If Ferrari had tried such a thing (yes, I know they have done in the past) then I feel certain that I would be highly critical of them. Because, of course, I was.
I’m confused. The man’s authority has been challenged and he’s backed away from the fight. It is my experience that people only back away when they think they can’t win. Has there been a significant change in the balance of power?
The other option is that Mercedes have made concessions behind closed doors. But if so, why the overt threats? Part of any such agreement surely would have been to say nice things about one-another.
I’m very confused.
This just doesn’t pan out for me.

No. The original problem came from the fact that McLaren had not seen the original incident of JT spinning off. They were informed of this my LH and had to make a decision on what he told them. It would seem that McLaren were under the impression that LH had passed JT against the yellow flag rules. If LH had given the full SP perhaps what they said would have been much clearer: i.e. let him pass if he wishes to.I think that McLaren are probably aware of the yellow flag rules with regards to overtaking. I mean, they've been there before.
Had it not been for Spa I would assume that LH would have informed McLaren of what had happened instead of asking for guidance.
An entirely fair punishment, but I did think it would have been a race ban (i.e. no suspension).
I'm a McLaren (and Lewis) fan - although I can't bear the sight of his father, but thats another story - so i'm glad they will continue to be on the grid. I don't buy the whole argument that Lewis was instructed by Ryan & did what he was told, so in my eyes his 'image' is slightly tarnished though.
