I noticed Anthony Davidson (I'm sure it was him) taking about the plans to ban refuelling and of course the word 'Turbo' got thrown into the equation.
I know the turbo era in the 80's was a bit marmite, though I loved it and I also know there are a good few purists on here that belive there's no replacement for displacement but in 2009 do people agree with Davidson?
Turbo's have lept back into the mainstream of petrol motoring and i'm sure I even heard the likes of Ferrari considering it in it's next generation of cars so it certainly wouldn't be out of place in the alleged pinnacle of motoring, F1.
Also, as Davidson says, it would allow much greater HP variation than KERS for overtaking but at the risk of having to crawl at the end of the race so you don't run out of fuel which would lead to some very exciting and unpredictable races.
I think it's a great idea.

Well oddly enough I fired off a text to them, for opinion about Mad Max's (not without merit) proposal for a 'world engine' which was for a 2 litre four pot, that in various states of tune, and charging would power everything from Formula ford-F3-F1-Rallying, etc.
F1 would have a big turbo bolted to it.
It sounds bonkers until you watch Legends of Motorsport about BMW on Youtube, when you see that a humble 4 pot 1600cc block that was designed in the 60's (?) with 50 hp mutated through everything M1, M3, from 60hp to 1300hp in Piquet's Turbo BMW at the very height of the turbo era.

Well I don't like the idea of a world engine. I want Ferrari engines in Ferrari's, BMW engines in BMW's and errr Renault engines in Williams (ok that doesn't work. F1 would have a big turbo bolted to it.

)However why not go back to a smaller displacement running turbos. Technology and development have come on leaps and bounds since the 80's and the "nothing..nothing..nothing.. BANG 1000BHP" days and you could have far greater control on the output of the engine.

I say let them run whatever they want. Set an amount of fuel they are allowed for the race distance and leave it at that. A turbo-4 pot or a monster v12 as long as it can make it round the required number of laps using the available fuel it'd be legal. We might get back to different engine configurations in different cars, a variation of sounds...

I like your style. Although someone shoot me down, with modern tech, engine management system, I reckon most would probably end up with a turbo four pot. Or someone with, lights blue touch paper, a turbo diesel...

No i'm gonna stick my neck up and say my guess is the most efficient way to get the most HP versus weight would be with a turbo.No no nonny no diesels!!! I still think they are horrible things.

+1. Turbo V6's, V8's V10's V12's whatever. Great stuff. They need to ban atmospheric dump valves though. Don't want any Ivor the Engine sound effects thanks...!

Sounds like the good old days of Group C in my book, which is no bad thing

Absolutely, but I would wager a good bet that power to weight of high-end production cars has gone up significantly over the past 20 years where as F1 has done the reverse.Forums | General Motorsport | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
