Question about what happens when two people score the same..

Evening all!
Right, my shiney new points table is pretty much finished now and I'll start using it from Brands, but I just wanted to check what the protocol is when two people score the same points.
At the moment, I have two options... I can have it so a shared number of points simply shares the position, so at the moment there would be a shared first place with two drivers on 57. Alternatively, I've written a bit of code when I was a bit bored the other night where it looks at each drivers performance in each race. It works out who has completed more races, who has finished on average higher up in their class, and weights the decision on podium finishes and fastest laps. So it effectively works out who has performed better over the course of the season and awards them the higher place (regardless of which class they are in), so the drivers in 1st and second place would both have 57 at the moment.
I think this is a little neater than the shared position way of doing things and leads to no shared trophies. Obviously it is also automatic and consistent so won't bias towards anyone. I intend to offer the points table (albeit locked to changes) free via a link on the website and here so anyone can monitor their progress and see how the decision has been made.
I wanted to check with both the drivers and JR before I finalise the code though, what you guys would prefer... Shared places or a fair system of keeping the better driver on top?

Oh and if there are any features you would like on this database, please let me know... Currently it will give you a breakdown of points in all races on one page, a count of how many fastest laps and victories you have scored, fastest lap at each circuit, dates, podiums, class and overall lineups, countdown in days to the next race and its location, weights from each circuit and average weight and I was thinking of adding measured power output, though this would only apply to a small number of drivers...
I've made it completely flexible as well (mostly because I felt like learning how to use Excel properly), this system can easily be adapted for next season, new drivers or different classes. In fact I could offer it to other series if they wanted it as it can be adapted in minutes...

hi nic in my understanding, in F1 or BMX , re points tie 57pts close and early in the season and good for the championship, final position would be determined on a count back,first, most wins if still a tie then most second places and so on, rewarding a higher placed competitor ,above a lower placed competitor with more finishes or fast laps. Cool I'll have a look at the MSA rules (probably should have thought of that!) and adapt the formula accordingly. It already works out how many times each driver has come 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc I'll just have to take out the bit about fastest laps and turning up but thats not a problem!
