On the other hand, what a superb job the beeb are doing this year. Jake is very good, getting better every race.

Legard is slightly better than he was at the start, he's not great, but neither does he make me want to hurt small, cute animals in the most awful way imaginable.

James Allen was dreadful. Legard is a distinct improvement, even though he isn't exactly the second coming. Overall, I think the BBC coverage is already lightyears ahead of ITV's.

It is extraordinary how an organisation like the BBC, and ITV before them, can work so hard to find a presenter who offends no one and end up with someone who is so featureless and insipid that he offends everyone.
I've listened to a lot of broadcast motor sport, and the only presenter I can think of who was as bad as Legard is Allen.
They seem to think that their mission is to broaden the appeal of Formula One, in order to justify what they've paid to broadcast it, and that to do that they need another Steve Wright. One wonders what will be next: perhaps an attempt to build up a younger audience with J. Ross?

As you mentioned a couple of Radio 2 presenters there Flemke, I'm gonna throw another name in that could actually be good because of his enthusiasm and his presenting style could suit F1 commentary.

To be honest, I never really had a big problem with James Allen. At least he was very knowledgeable and seemed to passionately care about F1, even if he did come across as very false and derivative in his delivery style.

Legard just seems out of his depth and keeps on making "embarrassing dad" comments that just make me cringe.

I'm not saying James Allen was without his faults. I just think that SniffPetrol demonstrated the power of the Media with it's 'Stop The Cock' campaign (sorry Richard) and without it perhaps people wouldn't hated James Allen so much.

I honestly think Evans would be good. I think that he enjoys his R2 show too much to give it up. On the other hand he doesn't need the money so a "fun" offer could be made.

Knowledgeable? Like Legard, he was dreadful at understanding what was going on in the race. I don't expect commentators never to make mistakes like misidentifying drivers, but they should have at least as good a grasp of the subject they are talking about as a moderately clued-up viewer. Neither Allen nor Legard do.

I think you are equating 'knowledgeable' and 'observant'. Allen was very knowledgeable, just not very observant.

The other thing that a good commentator should do is to know when to shut up and stop commenting, so that we can enjoy the race. Unlike the expert sidekick, the commentator rarely adds something that is not self-evident to anyone who is paying attention.
