With the rise of Button this year, it would be interesting to see where people think he fits into the list of top 10 most talented current F1 drivers.
Starting with the most talented, and in descending order from there.
Mine:
1, Alonso
2, Hamilton
3, Räikkönen
4, Kubica

8, Webber
9, Heidfeld

well, Buttons gone up in my view ofther this weekend, not because he won, but because he clearly cam manage his tyres better than Rubins in a un-expected race situation, did what he was asked, and got it home with no dramas
In raw talent, I still think Hamilton and Vettel are top of the list, but as an overall package my list looks like this:

For talented (not necessarily the "best" or "well-rounded"), I'd put forward:
1. Lewis Hamilton
2. Fernando Alonso
3. Kimi Raikkonen

6. Sebastian Vettel
7. Jenson Button
8. Mark Webber
9. Jarno Trulli
10. Rubens Barrichello
Demoted due to lack of experience: Sebastian Vettel. He could be in the top three, but hasn't proven himself enough yet.
Promoted because of experience: Nick Heidfeld, Jarno Trulli, and Rubens Barrichello. Probably shouldn't be on the list, but these guys are proven performers, and most of the young guns haven't shown enough gold yet.
Could have been on there, but not enough comparative data: Nico Rosberg, Adrian Sutil, and Heikki Kovalainen.

in fairness my gran could manage her tyres better than Rubens.

Heikki Kovalainen must be the best - he beat that Michael Schumacher in that Race of Champions don't you know and Michael was like trying really hard cos it was Race of Champions which must be well important like worth ten world championships or something and Michael was like the best ever cos he won for ferrari and they are s

Without going into great detail we must assume within F1 !
So with this lot it has to be the fastests.....in the same car, same weight, same time on track, same tyre wear etc etc etc.
surely part of that has to be: starting with the same tyres/car etc: what will they do with it in a race? i.e. looking after tyres/fuel/binning it...... also, what are they like in different conditons? rain vs dry, race vs quali? For instance Trulli is arguably one of the fastest qualifiers, but I would doubt many would pick him as a great racer..... Without going into great detail we must assume within F1 !

hmm...but question is 'most talented' not 'best racer'... or even 'quickest'

I think the point is that most talented = fastest so I compiled my list according to who I think would deliver the best lap time.
If it was a question of who is best overall, from technical setup to consistency to lap time to qualifying performance to conserving tyres to tactical nous to maintaining a strong mindset, that list would be very different.
But that's not talent as an F1 driver - the talent is in the lap time.
The aptitude to deal with all the demands of being an F1 driver is in the results.

I see your point - but that does tempt you (perhaps?) to skew your picks toward quali specialists who can't sustain it for race distance....I think the point is that most talented = fastest so I compiled my list according to who I think would deliver the best lap time.

My take on 'talent' is certainly getting a quick lap, but doing it not just as a one off, consistently over a long run - or at the end of a run to jump someone who has pitted from in front of you - or when conditions (or the car) are far from ideal. To some degree the technical setup/tactical nous etc surely is part of the talent equation? For instance to pick up on some threads from the races this year; Mark Webber is widely regarded as 'unlucky'... it crosses my mind that Senna or Schumacher were rarely 'unlucky'....
at the end of the day though: everyone can make their own judgement on what they think defines 'talent' in the context of an F1 Driver. The one thing that is certain is we're not going to agree!

7, Heidfeld (steady and has a car thats designed to work for kubica)
8, Kubica (despite having a car thats designed around him hes been crap this year)
9, Webber (talent would win you some junior formulas, hes hasnt, an ageing DC beat him in the WDC twice)
10, Rosberg (meh)
