Fernando Alonso has revealed that he would like to contest the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the world's oldest and most famous sports car race.

Could Alonso make a move to sports car racing in the not-to-distant future, especially given the current state of F1? On the same day he warned that he would leave Formula One if the big teams depart, the double world champion told reporters in Monaco he will attend next month's event, to take place between the Turkish and British Grands Prix.

However, the 27-year-old Spaniard denied that Le Mans is his "plan-B",should the departure of works teams leave him without a F1 seat in 2010.

"I hope to race more than one race a year," said the Renault driver.

"I am only 27 years old and have won the Formula One world championship twice, so there are also other categories to win," Alonso added.

What is the current state of F1? As far as I can see, it still has the best drivers and the best engineers who built the most advanced cars in the world (regulations permitting). So there's a bit of bickering at the minute, so what? Does anyone seriously think Alonso, a two-time world champion would give up something he's dedicated his life to, because someone wants a budget cap?? And he'd miss the F1 money too.

And why does it have to be one or the other? F1 or le Mans? Sure, Renault would kick up an almighty stink if Nando announced his intention to take part in le Mans while tied into an F1 contract, but since both events aren't held at the same time, a bit of determination on Alonso's part would see him slotting into an Audi halfway through the F1 season... if he really wanted it.

But it is a moot point, it's all just Alonso posturing, threatening all sorts of crap if he doesn't get is own way.

Who would actually miss him in F1? He has not exactly set the grass on fire this year. He needs to move to Ferrari or he will be forgotten about.

I'd have said the same about Button a few months ago. Alonso had more to offer yet.

Yes and Buttons example shows that there are many other capable drivers out there who will also claim that they have "More to Offer" in good car.

And that's my point about Alonso....

You don't half talk some crap sometimes. He is, still, possibly the best driver on the grid at the moment. He is outperforming his car like no-one else on the grid.
He says what he thinks, which is a nice change for a driver to have grown a pair and have an opinion.

I for one, would be sad to see him leave F1.

Outperforming Piquet is nothing to write home about. What race this year has he impressed you in that makes you come out with such a statement of him being the best driver on the grid at the moment? I can only remember Webber making him look like a chump this year in Spain was it??

Just give me one example this year that quantifies "possibly the best driver on the grid at the moment"? Only one will do, i cant honestly remember him overtaking anyone either? Someone may have the stats somewhere for the season but i believe he has finished more or less were he has started if not worse.

Couldn't agree more. He has consistantly over the last season and a bit put that Renault further up the grid than it deseveres. Admitedley out performing Piquet is nothing to write home about but as last season progressed he was finishing stronger each race. Not the car but purely on his own driving talent. This season the Renault is like a wet dog again but he's pushing it hard and proving that he can drive aswell as anyone on the F1 Circuit. At least when he's in a poor car he just gets on with it and doesn't keep moaning when his team dont give him the kind of wheels he can be competitive with. Unlike a certain Mclaren Driver I can think of.

Button deserves his chance, He hasnt been gifted with a great car from day one of his career. Has worked hard with the team preseason and as each race weekend arrives. Each weekend he is showing that it's not just his driving ability thats class but his understanding of the car and comunication with team members to get the best out of his car. Something Messers Whitmarsh, Hamilton jnr & snr should take note of.

Should Alonso be given the tools he could take several more WC titles. Hamilton knows this and I think fears what may come to pass at Mclaren and what opitunitys Alonso may be presented with.
Ferrari wont quit nor will other manufacturers. Ferrari will on the other hand be taking on another driver in the not too distant and the only certainty at the mo is that the new driver will be the spaniard.

Why the need to quote Mclaren and Hamilton in a negative light? If you want to mention Lewis when speaking of Alonso then explain how a Rookie matched and outpaced the great Alonso in the same car????

He has shown no more than any other driver in a poor car this season and i could find quotes all day about what he thinks/thought of his Renault team past & present that were worse than anything Lewis has ever stated.

Because people are quick enough to cast negitive comments about FA. I'm sick of all the Lewis hype and everyone thinking it was all FA causing the trouble. Anyone with half a brain cell could see that whatever RD told FA when he signed he went back on and clear favoritism developed in that garage. All because the good publicity they could create by pushing the young black driver and his rags to riches dad working 8 days a week fairytail story.
Lewis is certainly a tallent but for crying out loud, he's not the only tallent on the grid.
Alsono is getting far more out of his dead donkey this season than Lewis can get from his. People are quick to talk Alonso down but when its golden boy they're far more reluctant.

When have Mclaren EVER mentioned Lewis as being a black driver? What complete nonsense you have just spoke/typed! You honestly think that Lewis was chosen because he was Black? Note that he started Karting and winning at 8 - Mclaren took him on at 13 along with some other kids that never made it - Your comments are laughable and make me question the type of people that frequent the Motorsport section.

As for getting more out of his dead Donkey? Alonso has 2 more points this season, 2 which were gifted to him when Lewis lost 6 points in Australia.

As for FA - Patt Symonds thoughts summed up the guy perfectly and Piquet Jr's recent grumblings are also lifting the lid on the so called great one.

Pat Symonds, Renault's engineering chief who worked closely with the 26-year-old Spaniard when he raced to two consecutive world championships in 2005 and 2006.

Symonds, who worked at Toleman with Ayrton Senna, and also with Michael Schumacher at Benetton, describes Alonso as 'one of the most difficult drivers to understand' that he has personally encountered.

"He only had one very, very small chink in his armour when he drove for us," Symonds explained, "and that was the inability to accept being beaten.

"Actually that's a really good quality, but it was the one time he was perhaps slightly irrational - when Giancarlo (Fisichella) beat him, for example.

Fisichella incident is when Alonso claimed that Fisi(his team mate in 2006) should not have been "allowed" to overtake him??? He actually claimed that Renault did not want him to win and take the No 1 to Mclaren. This along with his conduct at Mclaren and pleading the fifh so not to get punished as he and Pedro had the secret information will forever leave this guy stained.

Another comment from an unnamed team manager - If he can stab Ross in the back, then he can do it to anyone.

LH fans bite too easily. Back to original point. Alsonso is a great tallent. I enjoy watching him race. Hamilton Is also a Great Driver, I have never stated he's not. Just mearly sugested that people love to jiz too much when he's about. Be it fans or be it Mclaren Team Members. Will people please remember that The grid is made up of 20 drivers who have all earnt that opintunity. About half that grid are exceptional and the others are there less on merrit more on who they know.
I just wanted to make the point that FA is one of the best on the grid. Something we Brits forget or deny because of the politics at Mclaren. Heaven forbid a British Driver (one that makes such a media darling) should be overshadowed by a Spaniard (no matter how tallented).

Ahem...

Yesterday Fernando Alonso said:
"It's the position we deserve, which is 10th position," Alonso told Spanish network La Sexta. "When you are so slow there is nothing you can do.

"If you start a heavy fuel load, you start at the bottom, and if you go light you lose the positions in the race.

"What we need is to go half a second quicker and then any strategy works."

"We need changes, any changes," he said. I'd welcome any new part. We have been using the same car since Bahrain and we are going worse and worse, and until we introduce a part that improves the car it will be hard.

Calm down dear!

Could you remind me at what point I mentioned Piquet?

I said that Alonso is outperforming his car. Much the same way that Button is. Much the same way the Kubica did at the weekend.

What I am saying is that I don't think that any driver could have got the finishes that Alonso got this year.

Clear enough?

Thought for the day:

When are people going to get on with their lives and get over Alonso at McLaren in 2007. Its getting very boring now. smile

Don't forget his 2 wins at the end of last season, in the last 7 races (not counting his retirement) he finished no lower than 4th in that Renault, that's pretty amazing in my eyes.
