Quick bump, now you back.
No problem Leigh, always nice to be able to do someone a good turn I think.
.....the only thing that I did need for the car was some new rear TR6 hubs after one was damaged at Brands. Quaife make new modified ones, but they won't be available untill end of July. Originals are made of unobtainium.......however, being the lucky chap I seem to be, and thanks to having some very helpful TVR friends of 30 years standing, unobtainium hubs are now being fitted at Colin Blower Motorsport. Looks like I may be out to play at Mallory (with some new shiney performance bits fitted
) ...if of course nothing else is found to be damaged when the rear drive train is spun-up again and the engine misfire is caused by something of a trivial nature.

Hope to see you there if you decide to get the´take the wedge out to play.

Good News that is John

Unfortunately, first indications are that my engine problems are not trivial
Will know more later........doesnt sound good dave whats the prob.
we've done most things to v6's including
seizing a lifter in the block.
snapped rings.
melted piston.
lost head off a valve and rammed it though the water jacket in the head.
cracked head.
snapped the end off the rocker shaft so not opening the valves on one pot
numerous head gaskets
seized water pump...
did a total of about 5 2.8's in 3.5 seasons..

Just got the all the story. I had a melted piston and rings explaining the power loss and the very black and smelly oil, knackered head gasket explaining the water loss with no visable leaks and a buggered cam follower. The new triple carb installation was found to be poor with ill / wrongly fitted gaskets, loose bolts, loads of air leaks, undersized fuel hoses and fittings. Thats caused the overheating and most of the mechanical damage. Thats the price one pays for not going to ones usual man for work to be done. The complete engine is now back in the safe hands of John Toovey and needless to say I'll not be going back to the bloke who fitted the carbs, EVER!!!!!!!!

We used to live in a shoe box on the M62 seizing a lifter in the block.

The broken valve was the funniest... it was at the Birkett 6 hour relay... on my first stint I came past the start on the end of my outlap and the valve broke... white smoke(steam) poured out of both exhausts hiding the track behind me in a thick fog.. and I coasted to a steamy halt at copse..
It was an inlet valve that had broken, and when it went through the head it let water into the cylinder, which was then also sucked into the other 5 pots.. through the inlet manifold... quite lucky it didnt hydraulic the engine..probably turned to steam as soon as it came out of the head.
i think my total on track time was less than 90 seconds... We had 4 cars that year mine did 90 secs, Dom's mg did 20 mins and spat its gearbox out. The G20 did a wheel bearing in its second session and took a couple of hours to source parts and fix, and Ed's westie having to do the bulk of the running started to vibrate its self apart and stopped on the circuit when the main power lead came off. leaving us with no running car or about 30 mins.... unsurprisingly we came plum last !!!
Still at least Ed got about 4.5 hours track time !!!

Hi Graham, engine is now repaired and being put back together as we speak. John will be putting the triple carb installation right using all the correct parts, gaskets, etc. We are hoping it will be on the engine dyno tomorrow where he will check the jetting and set them up properly. Hopefully I can pick the engine up on Friday and get it refitted in the car on Saturday.TVRleigh_BBWR said:
Sorry to hear about your problems Dave, I think standard parts are not that expensive, but I've got a spare 2.8 engine, in my spare car if you need it.
Leigh
Thanks for the offer Leigh, but I run a 2.9L cologne with American 3 ported heads so the exhaust would not fit anyway. Hopefully all should be sorted this weekend, if not, next weekend.Leigh
