Has Bernie lost it?....Hitler fan club remarks......
Discussion
I remember talking to a (then retired) London detective sergeant about Ecclestone. When he brought him to mind he called him: ". . . that little Jewish car dealer". This was in no way derogatory as there were very few Jews in the car trade, at least second hand, and it specified him. I feel sure the DS wasn't prejudiced against little people. Eccs has since said that he is not a Jew. I wonder if being or being called Jewish is his problem.
The DS' nick-name was Cushion as he was bald but with a darkish area of hair running horizontally from ear to ear. From the back he looked just like a cushion shot in snooker.
In the area of London where Eccs lived had, in his early life and when he ran his car dealers, a substantial anti-Semitic metality. This despite the well-integrated and very well-respected Jewish community around Petticoat Lane. I wonder if the fact that they were so well-respected was part of the bigots' problem.
But the whole interview smacks of a demolition job. Syed does a very pro-Mosley article then a week later it's onto Eccs. And all the problems with the NotW's article is forgotten. Perhaps bernie thought he was in for a ego massage as well.
I bet the authors, Steve Bird, Ruth Gledhill and Sam Coates, couldn't believe their luck.
I think we can depend on Eccs' integrity and dismiss any possibility of him saying such things to please his middles-eastern (apart from those of Israel) friends.
I've always thought that Eccs only did things when there was a dollar or two at the end. One wonders what benefit he expects to reap from this very dangerous stance. He might have sown the wind.
A very odd interview.

Its a classic technique isnt it? Get him to say the sort of thing that many of his generation would say (and many of mine for that matter) then cap it with an unrepresentative headline and ask a few rentamouths like McShane to comment.
Bernie's views on democracy are no more important or newsworthy than mine, but it fills the pages when times are quiet.

I've got to agree with Bernie on one point. I mean, I don't know that much about history, just more then Bernie, but I think Hitler should never have read that book Mein Kampf. That's what turned him. Still, I don't suppose they have much of a library in prison.
Hitler's good deeds are not publsihed are they. There was that show he put on for the ethnic minorities one night. It sounded so pretty. Something to do with crystals.
And didn't he disband that nasty gang of boy-scout like people and take their long knives away from them? We should listen to Bernie as he probably knows more about history than, well, any other east end second-hand car dealer you could name.

Just because you don't like the end results doesn't mean he didn't achieve what he set out to do.
Just when any sponsors might feel it safe to put a toe in the water, Bernie comes in with the most read article of the Times on-line. And most commented on. Invest in F1 and have your name associated with bigotry and anti-democracy rants.
When one man's comments on the iconography of the Third Reich brought in masses of protests, didn't Bernie think what harm he was doing to F1, and therefore his own, and CVC's, interests? Is he so far up his own fundament that he forgets that just because he says it doesn't make it so? Quite apart from the fact that Thatcher, for all her faults, never said one word against democracy. If she hadn't lost a sandwich or two, I bet she'd be well angry to be praised in the same breath as Hitler.
One wonders why, if he thinks labour is so naff, he thought them worth investing a £million or so in it. After all, if he is the enemy of democracy, he can't have wanted a peerage, could he.
This gives so much negative publicity to F1 that it makes you wonder if he's pressed the self-destruct button.
It could, I suppose, be seen as anti Mosley: "Hitler was good as chancellor, and mosley, for the same reason, would be good as Prime Minister" sort of thing, but if that was his intent, it's lost in the rest of his mumblings.
In one way I sort of had grudging respect for Eccs. I mean, unlike Mossy, he never went for beatification, a lorship seeming his only desire. He made no secret of the fact that his only target was money. But now?

why does eccles still have a job ?
Granted, morally and politically he was massively flawed. But imagine, what if he had just developed the country and had not tried to take over europe? Do you think that he would be regarded as a brilliant leader then?
I would just like to state that in no way am I a Hitler/Nazi sympathiser. I find what they did abhorrent. But when you look closely, he lead a country from a troubled, impoverished state, to a flourishing economic power in a very short space of time.
BTW Derek, I am not sure if your above post was meant to be all sarcastic or not, but Hitler wrote Mein Kampf. Feel free to give me a whoosh.

Absolutely agree. Furthermore ,doing this when the next race is the German GP with Mercedes and BMW showcases for their customers would seem to be staggeringly bad timing. I wonder what kind of reception he will get in Germany, or will he do a Max and be invisible there ?When one man's comments on the iconography of the Third Reich brought in masses of protests, didn't Bernie think what harm he was doing to F1, and therefore his own, and CVC's, interests? Ignoring everything after 1939, he transformed Germany into a strong industrial power when the country was in severe trouble after WW1. He set out the transport infrastructure in the country, created employment in remote areas, financially backed the car manufacturers to show Germanys engineering prowess.

1939 is just a date. The whole debacle started long before that. Econmically he was just as massively flawed as he was morally. Setting a country on a war footing, which was his sole financial move, is at the very best a short term solution. If you don't then go to war you are left with massive debts. Remember that there was an international recession. Just throwing all resources at armaments is not really the most sophisticated of tactics.Granted, morally and politically he was massively flawed. But imagine, what if he had just developed the country and had not tried to take over europe? Do you think that he would be regarded as a brilliant leader then?

The Germany that he ruined was impoverished. But it was, at least, improvinge along with other countries. Hitler took it away from any hope of recovery and then attacked the sources of finance and education.
Whichever way you look at it, Hitler's custodianship was a disaster for Germany. If the Americans hadn't thrown money at it after the war it would still be struggling.
There were lots of opportunities for Hitler to back down before invading Poland and many say that if he had things would have been great for Germany, although the Austrian 'problem' might well have cost them any permanent settlement, but if he had pulled back then the economuy would have collapsed.
The 'investment' in roads can't really be compared to that in canals and railways in this country, as they were isolated whereas canals served specific purposes. And, of course, unlike German infrastructure, canals were paid for out of private money.
When I was at school we 'investigated' Germany between the wars to see what could have been done to rescue it from financial meltdown and there were lots of options, although most depended on invading the Rhineland and ignoring reparations. But anything which involved massive increase in armaments was easy enough to refute.
Hitler's financial plans were very basic and basically flawed. The investment he needed to make was in production of stuff he could sell abroad. And few countries would buy guns and planes.
Lots of myths have been spread about Hitler's performance before the war due, in no small degree, to the support he had in this country from the posh people. But in fact he was borrowing money he had no hope of replacing without a war. So you can't ignore 1939 when assessing Hitler. It was the only route open to him. His country had no other option to get itself out of the mire but to steal assets.
Bernie's comments show the fact that his education was lacking with regards to 20th century history. Mind you, there have been enough dictators failing around the world for even him to realise that it's not really a way of getting things done. Whilst we criticise the Austrian with the silly moustache, Stalin killed more than him and Poll Pot combined. Probably including that Khan bloke's total as well. And isn't there some bloke in some African country who took over the breadbasket of the continent and reduce it to a poverty level unknown even in post WW1 Germany.
Hitler cannot even claim to be a curate's egg. There were no good parts.

Well, that summary is really it in a nutshell.
It is always easy to 'unite' a country by playing to base emotions and demonising minority groups but that isn't really success is it?
Max and Bernie act like dictators but the reality is that they only represent some rules and some beans. The teams and the fans are the sport.
