Father and son F1 drivers
Discussion
Seeing the boy Nakajima's, Piquets and Rosbergs on the grid this year made me think of other father and son F1 combos. I can only think of these. Any more?
Graham Hill. Damon Hill.
Mario Andretti. Michael Andretti.
Jack Brabham. David Brabham.
Gilles Villeneuve. Jacques Villeneuve.
Keke Rosberg. Nico Rosberg.
Nelson Piquet. Nelson Piquet Jr.
Satoru Nakajima. Kazuki Nakajima.
Jackie and Paul Stewart? Not sure if PS every drove in F1?

How long before the Andretti's score a coup, and have Father, Son, and Grandson through the doors of F1?
I bet that Marco will be on the shopping list of USF1.
Marco has not done much around the road courses in IRL/CART/IndyCar/whatever they are calling it this year, or in his brief A1GP visits.I bet that Marco will be on the shopping list of USF1.
I'd expect to see Joshua Hill in F1 before Marco ever does.
Marco did have some tests in the Honda back in 2006, but wasn't really on it.
I concur that he's not been so hot on road courses. His Grandfather needs to take him to one side, dump him in a sprint car and point him towards the "Triple Crown". That'll teach him race craft and car control BIG time!

I think Marco has talent and I would like to see him in F1 as I would like to see F1 have a presence in the USA where it is currently (thanks in no small way to Bernie) seen as a largely irrelevant sideshow.

I'd still like to see Marco in F1 given the chance.
Mario makes wine now. I have 3 signed bottles from his appearances at the "Deanos Vino race to the rooftops" in Indy prior to the 06,7 and 8 Indy 500's. Doesn't make his grandson a better racer I grant you...
Is it a coincidence that the only champion sons in the list, lost their fathers before they made it? Is having a successful Dad watching over you a help or not? I would think it has definitely helped to get some of the boys up the ladder, but are they really hungry enough to make it at the top level. Interesting psychology at play perhaps. Discuss...James Hunt's lad is certainly showing some determination.

Nah, because they aint good enough. Anyone noticed how the son is NEVER as good as the father? A shadow of the man if anything.
Dilution of genes, more competitive environments? Or more to it than that?
Unless the Dad dies young, thus inspiring the son to emulate the legendary feats of the father, without usurping their position as head of the family. I read about when Paul Stewart was testing his F3000 and Jackie got in and went faster. There is a lot of mutual protection going on within a tight knit family like that, not all of which may be conducive to seeing the ultimate potential of the offspring. Will Nico Rosberg ever step up to greatness? Or is he in fact technically a lot better, but just in a more competitive era? There is also perhaps a degree of resentment amongst team members towards the silver spooned son's fast track to the top, rather than the gritty determination of the father's tough ascent. Witness The Mansell's, etc.Nigel Mansell, Leo, Greg - for the future?

I have worked with a driver who is better than his F1 driver father ever was. Once he learns strategy and how to pace himself and to wait for situations to present themselves, he will be the real deal. These are things that can be learned, the genetic gift of being able to drive the car fast is already there. Being the son of a famous person can help or inhibit your progress depending upon how you deal with it. Some "second generation" drivers have used their fathers name, and some have tried to ignore it and do it on their own.Nigel Mansell, Leo, Greg - for the future?

FWIW Damon Hill is/was probably as good as his father, he used Graham's name to get deals to race because he couldn't have raised the cash otherwise.
