In the end consistently poor results will always find you out. Unfortunately in complying with the '09 Spec the manufacturers seem to have turned out cars with a very narrow sweet spot - either side of it performance falls off dramatically and unless you're lucky that the the driver's style resonates with that sweet spot it's all going to mean frustrating and expensive failure. (I wouldn't be surprised to see NP pop up in a Brawn next year).
I do feel sorry for him in some ways
That said, having seen him on the way up, I always wondered if he would have made it to F1 had be been Nelson Bloggs.
He put in some stellar drives in F3 and GP2 but there wasn't anything about him that shouted class on anything other than the best day in the best car with the moon and the sun in perfect unison and the bed having been left on the correct side.

I started racing at the age of eight and have broken record after record. I won every championship I raced in go-karts. I was South American F3 champion, winning 14 races and getting 17 pole positions. In 2003 I went to England, with my own team, to compete in the British F3 championship. I was champion there as well, winning 12 races and getting 13 pole positions. In fact I was the youngest ever champion. I raced GP2 in 2005 and 2006, winning five races and scoring six pole positions. I had a great season in my second year, only missing out on the championship to Lewis Hamilton due to technical mistakes of our team, which I take as my own as well, including running out of fuel during a race. I set the record in GP2 for the first driver to have a perfect weekend, scoring the maximum points available, in Hungary 2006. No-one matched that until July 2009 when Nico Hulkenberg did in at Nurburgring.

His results in previous formulas are very good and he was never going to be given the support where the fonze is the number 1 driver, he's there just to make up the numbers and give Flav potential marketing $$$.
If what Nelson says about the radio threats he had are true then I feel proper sorry for him. How you're supposed to attempt a quick lap whilst you're being told your job is on the line raises some pretty serious questions about Flav and his style.
