Great interview in Motorsport a few years ago when he told Simon Taylor? about developing the first prototype of the Porsche 917 on the Nurburgring... in a race. It had a gas filled chassis and a pressure gaugeon the chassis, if the chassis cracked the gauge would show no pressure. His comments about the german engineers trying to get him to drive it back to the pits if this happened were classic.

Only just found out that Frank Gardner has died, my all time hero from the sixties and seventies. Saw him race many times in F5000, F.2, Lola T70,the Alan Mann Falcon,Boss Mustang, Z28 Camaro and best of all Alan Manns Escort, the iconic XOO 349F. Never short of a saucy remark,I heard him say at Brands Hatch 'when the flag drops the bulls
t stops'. On another occasion, he was allegedly trying to tune his Mustang's radio into Radio Luxemburg just before flag fall. Check him out on You Tube doing a lap of Oulton Park in the Camaro, with another Gardner gem in his commentary. I went the Festival of Speed just to see him in XOO349F but never got lucky. R.I.P Frank there will never be another like you, totally unique.
