Yes I buy it - tip if you want a free copy ring them up and say your local newsagent doesn't stock it/won't get it - friend did this after I recommend it to him and spoke to a real person, mag arrived a couple of days later.

I subscribed to Motorsport from the early 70s when it had the most bigoted, self important, conceited writers in any publication. It was a tremendous read. Half their opinions really irritated me. The other half were classic. Bill Boddy was one of the great editors. A good friend of mine used to work at the print firm they used – it was part of the publishers – and Boddy would interfere right up until it went to press. And then would demand changes. He wanted everything spot on.
When he was removed as editor and pushed into the vintage pages the whole print firm went into mourning. Boddy couldn’t believe it and when leaving drove into a wall in the loading bay. Given how my mate used to moan about him on press day I was surprised to find him quite depressed and angry about the way he’d been treated. He reckoned the mag would go downhill.
I stayed with it for a number of years, stopping my subscription in the late 80s when it seemed to have lost direction. There was nothing to argue about. All very bland. It wasn’t the same without Jenkinson and they struggled to find a replacement. I picked up a copy just pre Stepneygate and I must admit to being quite impressed. I bought it for a while but Mosley’s actions just put me off the sport and I stopped buying it. Everything was so out of date by the time I read it.
It was great for a read on the train or flight but I get all the info I need on line now.

I met her at Silverstone during F1 testing a couple of years ago. I was asking about whether they ever need contributing writers. She gave me her card and told me to email her and she'd speak to the relevant people. So I did and she didn't. Unbelievable. Also, I met Simon Taylor at last year's Cholmondeley Pageant of Power and he was phenomenally rude to me. I was heart-broke as his writing is fantastic. However, Ed Foster and Damien Smith are absolute gents. I remember seeing Smith in the paddock at Oulton Park back in the mid-1990s when he was a Staff Writer on Club Autosport. He's come a long way since then and seems a most genuine and charming chap. Since they got Roebuck, Kirby, Oxley and Nye they now have the best columnists in motorsport journalism in my opinion. From the early 1990s onwards, Motorsport was in decline. Trying to be current and topical in a monthly format was becoming difficult and they were losing out to weeklies like Autosport and Motoring News. In 1997, the magazine was purchased by Haymarket and relaunched as a historic magazine only. For the first few years this worked really well and it was helped by the massive revival in historic motorsport spurred on by the Goodwood Festival and Revival.
Eventually, sales started to decline again and Haymarket began to panic. Things reached a low when they decided that the magazine needed jazzing up and the 80 year old green header was replaced by a "red top" banner - which ensured that it became lost on the magazine shelves along with all the other "red tops".
Eventually, Haqymarket gave up the ghost and the magazine was sold off. The good news is that, since the end of the Haymarket era, a whole new bunch of reknowned motorport writers and historians have joined the team and the writing is now better than ever. Also, they have returned to covering topical motorsport with much editorial and comment on current developments and politics - which is the right way to go with a monthly.
Long may this mag continue.

It does, and if you mention the offer that was in The Guardian recently they'll send you three month's issues for £1!!! Only thing is I've binned the paper so I can't tell you what the code was, but if you call 0845 357 9000 and mention the paper you might get lucky.Well this got people talking!

I think the website is really good too, last night was the first time I went on it and I liked the Podcast, especially hearing Nigel Roebuck's voice for the first time. I didn't know what to expect but I think he suits the way he writes, if you catch my drift!?
I think he really makes the magazine special as well as the 'Lunches with...'
A quality product that I might just subscribe to instead of buying at the counter each month.

I have the year 1968. Very interesting reporting. I even have the rare Belgian GP commentary piece that DSJ infamously did.Following a recommendation from a friend I have recently bought MotorSport for the very first time at the age of 36, can't believe I hadn't bought it before now. The current format is very good in my opinion, I have read Motorsport on and off for many years starting at school where it was the only magazine of interest in the library - not sure who was responsible for ordering it but I was glad they did.
I had a subscription when they relaunched as a classic only and it was good for a while but went off so I didn't renew. The red top years were very poor. I bought odd copies when it went back to green and swapped my subscription from Octane to Motorsport last year, taking advantage of the 2 year offer which gives a digital archive of a decade of the magazine.
My only problem with it is that it has too many good articles and I generally find the next copy arrives before I have had chance to finish the last.
