Throughout this season, following the early dishonest practice from Lewis and McLaren, Anthony Hamilton has looked like he's been carrying a wasp around in his mouth. Every time I've seen him he's annoyed me. He's had a massive reluctance to smile!
I think having his father so close to the team and working as Lewis's manager is an accident waiting to happen.
Okay, so origionally he didn't want people to take advantage of Lewis's potential success but surely, now that he's settled into the F1 community, he can take a back seat and let someone more professional take over, be there as moral support and not someone that might ruin Lewis's future.

I don't really like Lewis that much but have massive respect for his driving ability. I'm of the opinion that he is the most talented driver on the grid (by some margin), but can see this being comprimised by a father that is far too emotionally involved. Lewis WILL rebel sooner or later!

This post started well and it looked good in the middle, but it tailed off to a poor end. You should have said, Anthony Hamilton would appear to be a miserable , what the fk has he got to be miserable about anyway, the sooner he fks off to America with Lewis on a lucrative Budweiser deal the better.

Uuummm, yeah, uumm, that's....fine.biggrin
You've pretty much said what I was thinking anout Anthony but I don't think Lewis will be going anywhere for a few years. Saying that though, I would question Lewis's commitment (because of his old man) should anything else negative happen with the team. I can see Anthony pulling his little boy out of the play ground if, say, he fell out with his team mate next year or the team made a mistake.....

It seems odd to pick on Anthony Hamilton when there's been no suggestion of him having an adverse effect on his son's career. Not smiling much is hardly a tremendous criticism. The amount of footage given to him by the TV editors is not his fault.

If you really want to have a go at a father whose influence has undermined his, somewhat less talented, son then there's always Piquet senior. It would seem that he has single handedly ruined his son's F1 career and for nothing.

No, I don't want to have a go at anyone's father or son.
I feel that whilst Lewis is getting on with the job in hand (and impressively so), his father remains to be miserable.
Lewis should be getting on with it but having a father with negative vibes is going to have an effect which is why it's time for him to stand aside.

The reason I think he is negative is because last year, he was giving off a very positive energy/body language. By contrast, he is now defensive and unapproachable (until Lewis wins or does well).
I don't think that when the camera is off him he is all happy and wonderful until he sees the camera, then pops that wasp in his mouth again.

Maybe Anthony Hamilton is fed up hearing all the pathetic criticism the British public and media have heaped upon him and his son; so doesn't welcome a camera being stuck in his face when he simply wants to watch his son racing?

The sad fact is managing any 'ego' driven superstar is a job for professionals and too often amateurs 'family' or lifelong friends become involved.....

What Anthony need sto do is enjoy being a Father and basking in all of the light from his hard work, and leave the endorsements, contractual negotiations and advertising stuf to the sports marketing professionals who understand the business not pretend to....

All sportspeople need good lawyers, accountants, financial advisers and mentors....not unqualified family members or school friends!

Jaques Villeneuve and Jenson Button are two who should have been better managed. Mark Webber and the list could go on for those who have never fulfilled their professional potential over the last dozen or so years.

Have you read Lewis's book , in that they go into detail about Mr hamilton senior and how he worked 2 jobs to keep his son in racing ect and how they worked together to achieve what he has , they are a close knit unit and Lewis needs his dads support even now afterall they are a TEAM !!! perhaps your perception of him beind miserbal is wrong and his look is more a look of concern as his son races around a race track !! afterall if it was my son the only time i would look relaxed and happy is when he is NOT in a race car !!

I'd go as far as to say he will never leave McLaren. Why? Because his contract won't let him!

Look at this from McLaren's point of view. If you'd been bankrolling somebody's racing career from the age of twelve, you'd make sure they stayed with you forever.

Lewis himself has said that he wants to stay with McLaren for the rest of his F1 career. That could mean he has to!

Given that Anthony has got his son a long term deal with one of the two most successful ever F1 teams, no doubt with a quite nice retainer I struggle to see how he has held his son back or harmed his career. I do agree he probably hasn't looked as cheerful on the whole this year as before, but the results haven't been as cheerful as before, so maybe not surprising.

I found it interesting that in the commentary on Sunday they mentioned that John Button had been to every one of Jensen's F1 races, whilst there have been a few criticisms of him there have been many less that about Anthony Hamilton. Why the difference? Anthony is there both as Father and Manager of Lewis, he has managed Lewis' career pretty successfully for over 10 years. If Lewis is happy for him to be there I don't see why anyone else should worry about it.

I'm sure he will smile more when Lewis is winning more.

Lewis is signed until 2012 at Mclaren but i also cant see him going anywhere unless Ferrari made him an offer he could not refuse. Not sure why Pistonheads seems to still have a facsination with everything that Hamilton does or says on and off the track, good or bad.

What kind of smile his dad has when the producers focus in on him does not be bother me one IOTA and i am suprised that it bothered the poster enough to post such a pointlessthread similar to - Whos Dad is cooler? or What does Lewis see in Nicole? OR Whats with Jensons dads Nose?

Its pathetic and has no place on a Motorsports section.

I never understand judging people about their facial expressions, suggested smugness etc etc.

I think many people need to give the guy a break, he's a) Supported his son since day one, b) Act's as his manager and c) I guess he loves motor racing through and through.

I wish I had a Dad like that who supported me like he has supported Lewis.

I don't know the real Anthony Hamilton and I would suggest neither does 99.9999999% of people on here.

Interesting that the criticism of AH is that he's family and 'not a professions F1 Manager'. How does one become a professional F1 Manager? Do you go to F1 manager school or is it something you develop into over time? Of course it is.

If you look at, ooo, Briatore, for example... now there's a professional manager... AH could never be that good for his clients.

Hmm, clients. AH manages Lewis. How many drivers, F1 and other formulae, did Briatore manage? What about Jenson's manager and his agency? AH might be the publicly visible figure of Lews' management but you can guarantee that he's not the only person involved from admin to advice.

AH has been managing his son's career for well over 10 years and that's a lot of experience and he's not been to bad at it. 100% of the drivers he's managed have won the F1 WDC...

Most 'professional' managers have worked withing corporate sponsorship or marketing for a number of years and many have law degrees or marketing degrees.

Why is it that in Europe few sports 'stars' grace major TV campaigns, or actually promote brands beyond their sports? Bad management and poor exposure!

The exceptions are obviously athletes signed to Gillette and one or two world class exceptions....Oh Hoy....fancy a race!

Across the globe many sports stars (Australia, Japan, USA, Germany, Mexico, Brazil etc these people are everywhere....yt F1 drivers are invisible.

Yes these guys may earn good salaries but how many of them have a career after motorsport? Few and that is where good management comes from along with wanting to develop 'Icons' not fast money!

Best driver by a country mile, i think he will in the WDC next year. His dad on the other hand is a bit of a cock but he came out alright in the interview at the weekend, said some nice things about Button.

I have to agree, he seemed a different bloke... much more relaxed than usual...

Firstly how can you base this on a couple of shots from a GP weekend? He may well have been smiling every second the camera wasn't on him for all you know. When you watch something on tv (i.e. F1 like his dad will be watching whilst Lewis is racing) do you sit there with a constant grin or with a normal face concentrating a bit?

Secondly, he has a job to do, its good that he is doing it and not just pretending to be a manager and getting drunk the whole weekend. It would be easy to take advantage.

Thirdly they have done pretty well as a team for most of Lewis' life up until now...can't see it being flawed after all Lewis is made for life, has a WDC and will no doubt win many more.

Fourthly he seemed pretty happy in his interview at Brazil during qualifying. He has most of the time this year to be honest, as has Lewis.

Fifth, who cares?
