2010... multiple champs fighting it out

Just some thoughts.
In 2010 we will have at least 3 current or former WDCs, 4 if Kimi signs.... 5 if Villeneuve does make it back.
Button, Hamilton, Kimi and Alonso will probably have competitive cars, or at least have the resources and experience of teams behind them to get competitive through the season.
Have there ever been so many WDCs racing at the same time?

Interesting - I think 4/5 is just about the most champions on the grid at any one time.
1965:
Clark
Surtees
Brabham
Hill (G)
Hill (P)
all had won world titles by that stage and shared the grid with another 3 future champions: Hulme, Stewart and Rindt
The early 80s would be the only other time there have been that many champions on the grid at any one time:
Fittipaldi
Hunt
Lauda
Andretti
Jones
If you bent the rules to include future champions, you could also bring in 1991:
Piquet
Prost
Mansell
Senna
Schumacher

Plenty of years with future champs competing; I was interested in reigning and former WDCs competing.
Agony of choice for next year; £10 on Vettel, or go for another wildcard as Button was this year... might wait for the first test. Given Ferraris recent cars, and their ability to be kind to tyres, and with their driver line up I think it could be a good shot for constructors; might actually get some odds better than evens!

Next season is going to be such a bun-fight!! (can someone tell Kimi he's got an acceptance letter to sign!! the suspense is killing me!!)

Very true. Kimi announced himself to the F1 world when he drove a dog of a Sauber to an unbelievable 6th place finish having had relatively bugger all experience of top flight single seaters previously. I think Massa only had the measure of Kimi when Kimi was ordered to back off or couldn't really be arsed. That said, massa still outperformed the car.Button/ Kimi and Fred are all quite similar in age, and could have a few years left.
Hamilton and Vettel will almost definitely have some more world titles to their name. Perhaps even Nico...
Either way, it doesn't seem we'll have a mid-to-late '94 crisis, when there were no World Champions.

Personally, I think it was because of the KERS system in the car, from what I've heard it changes the whole dynamic of a car with the energy recovery during braking. With no KERS next year there was little reason to have to get used to it for the sake of a few races. I did wonder why they couldn't turn off or strip out KERS just for Fisi's car, but maybe the system is so completely hardwired into the 2009 Ferrari that they had to run the system in the car???ajprice said:

I would, he is too old and does not have the necessary fitness anymore. The age thing is slowing his reaction times, the fitness thing will limit his speed through corners, particularly his neck.Mind you he is still many times better a driver then me
