New Porsche 911 GT3 Racer Unveiled

Porsche has revealed its latest 911 racer, the FIA GT3-class Porsche 911 GT3 R.

The 911 GT3 R is based on the GT3 Cup one-make racer that Porsche unveiled in September, but gets a bored-out 4.0-litre engine developing 480hp - 30hp more than in the cup car and road-going GT3 RS.

The new GT3 R has been deliberately designed to be accessible and approachable for its customers - people that Porsche coyly describes as "ambitious amateur racing drivers". As a result it gets ABS, traction control and a Nissan 370Z-style 'throttle-blip' function to help smooth progress on the down through the sequential six-speed dog 'box.

The new extra-wide body should also help the stability of the new car, making it more driveable than the old 911 GT3 Cup S.

The Porsche 911 GT3 R makes its world debut on 14 January 2010 at the Autosport International, which runs alongside our very own PistonHeads show (get your tickets here) at the NEC in Birmingham.

Customer teams will get the car in spring 2010, having forked out a base price of a cool 279,000 euros (£250k) plus taxes.

Surly it can't be worth that much more that a regular cup car? Isn't that the same price as the current RSR race car?

I understand it's a racer, but it's based on a 911 and everythings at the correct height to conform.

Other than the emissions, what could stop one of these from being taken on the road?

A regular Cup is about 140k, I think - the Cup S (or now the R) is about 270k, and the RSR is about 380k I believe.
Porsche do make a lot of Cup's and significantly fewer of the R's and RSR's - perhaps that accounts for the price difference. Or maybe they can just get away with it!

TBH with the suspension, clutch, ground clearance etc it's probably a pretty nasty thing on the road anyhow.

Its unlikely to be homologated / have type approval for road use. Nothing to stop you going down the SVA route - though why you would modify a race car for the road when you can buy a road version and modify that is beyond me

nothing to stop but would need a few changes, road legal tyres as it comes with slicks, and road compound brake pads as its current ones wont be much cop for road use, and the wing my need to be swapped for the GT3 RS carbon item as i think theres some rule about allow wings as it would need to pass an SVA test

No handbrake.
The fuel rig may well not be allowed either.
Not sure what the legal requirements are for lights.

People have made Cup cars road legal - but I think it's quite a bit of work - and mostly pointless. The sequential box would not be suited to the road.

The 911 Cup is build on the regular 911 production line in Zuffenhausen whereas the Cup S/R and the RSR are handmade in the R&D Center in Weissach. That's the main reason for the big price difference.
