Credit Crunch and BTCC

I was watching that BTCC clip that Hammond did for Top Gear and he mentioned at the start of the video that the BTCC was invented due to car manufactuers wanting to shift cars in the post war years.

So, following on from this comment, I present the idea of scrapping the scrappage scheme and putting the latest models like the Renault Laguna, Ford Mondeo, Vauxhall Insignia, Seat Leon, VW Golf/Passat et al. on the BTCC grid. That way cars dont have to be pointlessly scrapped and we get proper touring car racing again.

Not going to happen though, is it?!?

No, I meant the decent older cars like my mate who scrapped his 1.4 Corsa B with 20,000 miles on the clock! (just an example before I get flamed)

People are scrapping decent second hand cars and future classics etc.

The reason people are sticking with race-proven WTCC cars is that they are race-proven WTCC cars. If you want something with a different badge you need to have a massive budget and sponsors that don't mind you running around at the back all year (like Chilton!). Even then the car could turn out to be fundamentally flawed like the Mk 5 Astra (apparently), the racers that are there to win will get back into the proven cars so that they stand a chance - this is why the Integra is still around.
