Lotus' original colours were green - as was every British racing team in the 1950s.
The cars usually had thin yellow piping and the words Lotus in yellow under the cockpit combing. The yellow and green ACBC badge was placed on the nose.
In the late 1950s/early 1960s, with the advent of more TV coverage (which was still mainly black and white), the British teams began to try and differentiate their basic green cars from each other -
Coopers placed two white stripes on the "bonnet".
BRM went for a red dayglo nose cone
Brabham had a gold or bronze nose cone
Lotus opted for a yellow nose cone and a yellow stripe up the "bonnet"
Lotus abandoned their traditional colours in 1968 whern they secured sponsorship from Players and ran the cars in the Red and White Gold Leaf fag packet scheme.
In 1972, they switched to the black and gold John Player Special livery
In 1973, they replaced the gold with yellow as it stood out better on TV.

?Surely green and gold is Lotus colours. I remember having a black logo on my old Elite when GC died but that was a short-lived respect thing.

Lotus do seem to have a pretty experienced driver line up; with Mr G in charge could they pull some surprises?

Exactly.No one knows where he chose the name Lotus from either. He never revealed why he picked this name.
You can see that Caterham's "7" badge was very heavilly influenced by the original Lotus badge.
